I think market samurai is very good. Not only does it tell you the search volume and competition of the keyword, but also it tells you whether that keyword is profitable or not. I think this is very important. You could know if it's easy to make money by targeting that keyword.

You have competitors who are also building links for their sites. I think you should do some research on your competitors. Then you will know how to beat them.
I don't think this matters a lot. I found a article on google page 1 before. I noticed the keyword appeared for 7 or 8 times in the 500-600 words article. So I think 1%-2% is just OK.
Yahoo directory is really powerful. And another helpful directory is DMOZ. But I think $300 for the listing is expensive. Because I can hire a seo expert for about $200 and ask him to get my site to #1.
