keyword density question ?

lets say i have an article with 500 words exact
i have about 5 mentions of the keyword "coffee maker reviews" in the 500 word article

so the density is

1) 3 * 5 /500 = 3%

2) 5 / 500 = 1%

which is correct 1 or 2??

It's 1%. Why would it be 3 * 5/500?

If you're multiplying by 3 because there's 3 words then that means you're saying coffee = maker = reviews, so the combined keyword density with those 3 words being the same is 3%. That's just nuts, since coffee is a completely different word than maker and reviews

Just wondering, from where did you get that 3 ?

Not really. If your article is stuffed with the same keyword, like 15% then you are a spammer in G's eyes.

It's 1% when I use dupfreepro 2.0.

The keyword density measures how often a keyword is mentionend in a text compared to the total number of words in the text.

A keyword can also consist of multiple words. Just because you call it keyword it does not mean that it has to be just one word.

Your keyword in this case is "coffee maker reviews", it does not matter how many words your keyword contains! So the keyword density is 5 / 500 because your keyword is mentioned 5 times in a 500 words text.

Sorry everything else is nonsense - and the most important part for good long term results is that the keyword density is not too high.

Sorry... It's 3%. 1% is a mathematical impossibility...

If your keyword has multiple words then each word does count as part of the calculation, as otherwise, using the example above, if you entered

coffee maker reviews coffee maker reviews coffee maker reviews coffee maker reviews...

etc, for all 500 words then you'd have 500/3 = 167 instances of your keyword. 167/500= 33% keyword density for what is clearly 100% of you word count featuring your keywords.

Keyword density should be calculated as:

the total number of combined keywords used / the total number of words.

Otherwise, you end up with mathematically incorrect skewed numbers.

HOWEVER:

Keyword density should now be used ONLY as a controlling factor - not a target. Any more than 3-5% or a few mentions is counter-productive, and more importantly will read badly and get flagged at a manual review. Content should be written with the reader in mind, as any kind of keyword stuffing can lead to content being ignored and a drop in ranking; not necessarily penalised, but just not counted.

Sorry... incorrect.

When you say you've tested this a few times, I can only presume you mean you've gotten away with it up till now. I do extensive SEO testing for corporates and the thousands of sites I own, manage and do SEO for; we're talking analysis across thousands of sites and tens/hundreds of thousands of content submissions...

Over optimisation is a VERY real factor in Post Panda 2011 SEO; adapt to it or die.

Sorry that is not right - as i mentioned above if his keyword for which he wants to rank is "coffee maker reviews" then the keyword density is only relevant for this keyword since he will try to rank for this specific keyword and will also use this keyword in the anchor text for his backlinks.

"Coffe maker" e.g. or "Maker reviews" would be different keywords to target. You will get different Results for theses different searches....

And if he wants to rank for "coffee maker reviews" he should spot that keyword and no other combination.

BUT ANYWAYS:

I think the it's not worth the headache since you only have to pay attention to what was said before - don't overoptimise and you are good. Focus on good backlinks with the keyword (coffee maker reviews) in the anchor text.

Dont be too concerned about keyword density man. If you think too much on it you might be in trouble. The latest G algo's give importance for content quality not the key density. Just use the keyword wherever appropriate & put your efforts on link building

I had one of my sites stuffed with keywords once and it really had a negative affect. I had to change it and fix the problem. 3% to 4% is a good range I find.

I don't think this matters a lot. I found a article on google page 1 before. I noticed the keyword appeared for 7 or 8 times in the 500-600 words article. So I think 1%-2% is just OK.

if you fill up all 500 words with your keyword phrase, then the result must be 100%. therefore the correct answer woul be 3%.

Btw, keyword density does not matter. It is way more impotant to know 'where' keywords are located.
