I agree it is to build trust. If the site has been up and running for some time, they should have lots of reviews up, and some hopefully are negative. If they allow comments, some of the comments may give you an idea on how the buyer of a product felt about the review.
That is a weird one. Did you figure it out? I would say check another computer also, but check inside and home page to be sure they agree with your view of it. I hope your site is not being hit by google.
