Hi
I have hired this contractor and I am about to pay him nothing. but i feel bad. i am kind of angry right now so maybe i am not the best judge. so you vote. how much should i pay?

I hired this guy to transcribe a video. great feedback, some past transcription jobs in his profile. So all of my troubles started after i hired him. first, he said the video is too big and his internet connection keeps cutting off, so he cant download it. Then, I converted the video to mp4, significantly reducing its size. I sent it to him, and he downloaded it. When it was 3 am my time, he sends me a message saying the video is not playing. the video is fine on my end.

Now, the job was due at 7 am my time. so I wake up and 6 am and see his message, and freak out. so I converted the video to mp3, and sent that. he says his body is starting to shut down because he has been up for 14 hours, he will take a nap and be back. so i wait and wait and wait. he comes back 7 hours later. a nap is not 7 hours.

so its now 12 hours after the deadline and job is still not done.

his quality of work...not so good, he has misheard a lot of things and i have to waste more of my time fixing his mistakes.
so I am wondering how much I should pay
100%
75%
50%
nothing

I would probably pay him the 50% since you are using his work, even if you correcting mistakes. But I tend to be overly generous.

so no one else is interested in voting? I will wait a couple of hours, if i dont hear anything from you guys, then I will end contract and pay nothing. speak now or forever hold your peace.

This --> "if i dont hear anything from you guys, then I will end contract and pay nothing. speak now or forever hold your peace."

Please read it yourself? Does it sound any good? Blaming and punishing your worker because you're not getting any replies in BHW?

As a Hiring Manager, you must do your due diligence before hiring anyone. Contractors at oDesk are working their ass off to get a job and no wonder he is exhausted as he is up for 14 hrs.

If I were you, I'd pay 75% and leave a 3-4 star feedback to him.

Considering the fact that you are usein his work and he did some of it i would go with 50% of the pay and leave a honest review on his profile so other people know how he works.

Just my 2 cents.

If the late delivery didn't cause you any frustrations or business losses, I think you should pay like 100% and close this on a friendly note, so may be he does things better the next time you need. Completely upto you, but just a suggestion.

Don't pay him anything. You feel bad because you're a fairy. Find someone else to do it and tell him to F*** Off.

Just pay him and give him a good rating so he'll also give you a good rating. It's good to be nice at the same time maybe you can use them in the future :). 75% is good.

rofl @ body shutting down after 14 hours.

I'd pay the guy 100% and leave honest feedback. It's more professional and puts you in a better place mindset wise if you pay him 100% and move on.

Nice business ethics. I'll take note never to do business with you. Ever. I'm sure many others will also be doing the same.

He did the job so your attitude is extremely harsh. You can't just not pay someone because you deem it's not up to the standards you expected. If someone delivers you a functional product then you pay otherwise you're quite simply a scammer.

My thoughts exactly...

14 hours?? If I'm behind a deadline I'll stay up 30-40 hours. Not all that difficult, especially if you're doing something that does not require deep philosophical thought. (Dangerous amounts of caffeine used: 'Stay Awake'. It's super effective!)

Personally... I'd pay him 100%, and give him a scathing review. It's important to hold up your end of the bargain, even if he doesn't hold up his... but that's purely my personal opinion.

I'm a bit of a spendthrift, so I'll try to not be for a second, and be objective.

I suppose it depends on how much he's charging you. If he was getting a good deal right off the bat, I'd be tempted to go around 50% to refund him for some of the time he spent (you are still using his work) while charging him for your time that he wasted, and afterwards give an honest review of the facts, no impressions or emotional language, and give him an average(ish) score.

It's a few dollars.... just pay him and get over it.

Anyway, take responsibility. it was your fault for taking his b.s., hundreds of thousands of workers out there for cheap, should've switched a contractor long ago.

I'm guessing this job was for pennies, so just pay him. Employers get a feedback rating as well on odesk, and you want to keep this positive so you attract the best contractors who won't apply for everything.

The trick with hiring on odesk is to vet the contractor first. Chat with them on skype for a bit, even a video chat. Get a feel for how competent they are. You can't just go off their test scores and feedback, those can be manipulated. And employers, who also want a good feedback rating, sometimes aren't honest about how bad the contractor is.

According to me you need to give him a new deadline. If still you will get nothing then make the payment a big 0

Don't start on me little boy. I gave my opinion as a proffesional person that has nothing to do with you.
Why would you want to pay for something that is not right? Would you buy a car that's not working? Thats bad business ethics, not paying someone 100% and leaving them positive feedback, WTF are you on.

Little boy? Are you on drugs, chav? I'm older than you are and more than likely a multitude of factors wealthier. Let me guess, you live in a council estate and get your weekly dole cheque?

I found your scammer attitude extremely distasteful to begin with, but after your arrogant/aggressive/chav-like response I find you even more repulsive. Isn't it time for your dose of methadone? Maybe take it and let the real entrepreneurs get on with business.

PROTIP: Learn to spell 'professional' before pretending to be one, chav.

He is only late by hours... Not days.

Pay da man his monies. Also do more checking around before you hire.

And I agree with Blue Turtle. He has a good head on his shoulders.

depends on his efforts pay him 50% and give him one more chance of he works well this time then pay extra to him......
