Really depends on what ur pushing and how ur stats are, but I like to keep mine low and follow/unfollow between a steady interval

Hard to get real people to follow you back if you're above the 1k's in following, they'll know you're there just for the follows.

If you're doing original content its better to differentiate yourself from your competitors so that later on people don't confuse your competitors lousy sites with yours!
