It sounds more like they're using PBNs and blocking them from crawlers such as AHREFS, Moz, Majestic, etc. If you try to look at the backlink profile of my money sites, you'll hardly find anything, but I assure you it's not just random luck.

The case studies I've looked at since May, and my own personal experience, suggest that it's difficult-to-impossible to rank new sites within 30 days. Sure, you can get indexed and up to about page 4 for some keywords, but page 1 doesn't seem so attainable.

I use Scrapebox, specifically the Alive Checker addon. Checking for 100s of millions of sites is definitely a tall-order, though. Maybe refine your parameters. With my modest set up, it checks a few hundred per minute.

This is an issue I run into frequently, and I don't risk it with these domains. As SeoElf said, if the previous SEOer let it drop, they probably did so for good reason. I know it sucks to find a legit domain with solid metrics and great backlinks, only to discover that some spammer picked it up...

What sort of a backlink was it from CNN? I have sites with CNN backlinks, and they're all do-follow. The only nofollow links on CNN that I'm aware of are in the footer.

Personally, I choose not to risk it. I used to keep a lot of project data in Google docs, but I feel safer now working in Open Office. I should probably stop working so much in Chrome as well. I don't know if Google actually hoards all this data, but if they can legally do so, they'd be stupid...
