Google measures success based on Click Through Rate, while you measure success based on Conversion Rate. Being nice to them will get to access to limited betas and other cool tools/market research, but doing what they suggest hands down will cost you a lot of money, poorly spent for the most part.

Agreed... you need to base it on your costs. Personally I do hourly, retainers and % of spend are a pain in the ass a lot of the time.

They'll use a sample of of your competitors, usually 3-5, and share the data aggregated.

You're going to get immediately penalized if you use an affiliate URL in Adwords.

Depending on how much you spend, you actually can get industry information like that from Google, as long as you have a dedicated account rep. It's not available publicly.

All that information is in the Adwords interface. You can get a full list of all the websites your display network ads appeared on, and the associated metrics with that site/page.

Just a heads up, if you dispute the charge with your credit card company, you can bet that you'll have issues ever advertising again. Be it IP, name, address, payment method, account structure... its crazy what Google does to match similar accounts back to each other.

Adwords campaigns are placed on Adsense, but it tracks through the "display network". You'll find most enterprise/agency accounts have these split out, due to the significant performance difference.
