Depends on your budget. There are some cheap courses online to start with. I myself started off reading from all major IM forums, blogs, social media etc etc... if you have interest and passion in it, you will do anything to get that knowledge.

Google might look at it as dead. Create back the original posts if possible and continue adding posts to it and when google crawls it a few times and knows that you are continously updating the sire, it will start giving juice and then you can start to redirect the juices.

In this century, both groups are going online. Unless you are targeting a different age group. Then that's another story.

Use google alerts. Enter the keywords you would like to have updates. Then google will sent you email to alert you.

Do both social and seo. Seo takes a much longer time than social media. Social media is a great way to get targeted traffic too. Its can get your blog off the ground much faster.

When doing linkbuilding for niche sites, i link build to internal pages more than the main pages. From my experience, once inner pages gets juice, so does the main page which also gets stronger.

Seo takes time and patience. I look at link building as promoting my websites and to get the word out that my sites exists. Its just one of the thousands of ways available. Promotion via social media can be another channel too. Work both real hard.

My practise is to have at least 5-10 posts or more before i start linkbuilding to be natural. Don't go crazy on links, go slow and natural always.
