Sorry to hear about that, although as others have mentioned this is also an unfortunate aspect of any business. Hard work and intelligence pays off best when mated with perseverance.

Starting out doing it for free might be worth a shot. Wouldn't want to get too carried away before you tried to convert it into some business of course, but still a good idea.
