It would be better to go for those domains that you can restructure the way they were originally setup. If there are strong links pointing at internal pages that you cannot rectreat, try 301ing to the homepage.

Not at all, Alexa is almost immaterial as it doesnt tell you much about all websites on the internet.

Have you tried sites like expireddomains, you may want to download the latest additions and run through your checking systems.

Automated directory submissions should be a no no. Go for niche specific ones that do not allow auto approvals. Pick those that have established authority.

GSA can help you build all sorts of links, it can do forum profiles and posts as well. Xrumer would be good for professionals, not really recommended for someone trying things out.
