Is right on the money. I've tried the easy disavow tool first to no avail. Wasn't until i showed some effort and did manual requests to get as many taken down by contacting pubs and then disavowed the rest, that I got back in.

Normally PR Toolbar updates happen every 3-4 months. There are some rumblings that it is going away.

PR1 is not that hard to get. It also depends on the each site backlinking to the site in question. Could be 5 very low value site's with not much link juice to give or could be 4 no value sites and one somewhat decent site driving the PR1.

If a page that is returning a 404 has little to no value (no backlinks to it), then in most cases I won't worry about a 404 header response. BUT if a page has some backlinks, I'll 301 it to a similar page. :)

Thanks for taking the time to explain your thoughts and method. Good stuff. I have seen first hand that traffic isn't everything. I have a site that ranks very well for a highly searched term BUT it is not a good converting term. More of a discovery term. My mistake when I first optimized for it...
It depends on the keywords they are targeting and the competition level in that geo for those kws. At those price points, it is important to convey to the client the value of long tail keywords as that is most likely what you'll be able to get some wins on sans any budget for link building...
