Why not both? If you build up the link profile of your home/index page, every new article you post will automatically receive a portion of that ranking power. Plus it's pretty unnatural to have all links pointing directly to articles. Mix it up for best results.

False. Most of what you said is good advice but this just isn't true. As long as the web continues to use HTTP, SEO will always be about linkbuilding. Some of the other signal may gain importance over time, but to dismiss linkbuilding would be a mistake.
