I have a three letters .co domain, it was available and i registered it, never built a site, the domain was never used and still i got an appraisal and real human evaluation for it at 7000 USD, so i guess .co just like any top TLD, they are wanted if the name is short, meaningful.... etc.

Hotmail (live) dose ask for a phone number, but you can still avoid that by clicking the small link in blue "Or choose a security question" live / hotmail / msn is still my favorite source for free emails
