What's the duration on contracts you establish? I am not sure how many months people will typically be comfortable with.
My guess is 6 with the first 2 paid up-front, judging from parts 1 and 2.
I am targeting small local businesses and franchised venues.
I've avoided big chains that are centrally owned, since I can't talk to an owner.
Is it still worth contacting them? That is, is it likely they have a budget (advertising?) allocated that they can spend from?
I wouldn't worry about length. Contracts for consultants are designed to protect you, so read them carefully -- I'm sure the longer ones have more protective clauses.
Once you've made some decent money, have a lawyer modify or draft a new contract just for you -- this way you can take...
