It depends on the niche actually, from my experience. When the niche is generally "gray" in terms of website competition and 50-60% of the sites are more or less crappy, then Google isn't showing that it cares too much for the results they provide.

I reckon you are in shared hosting or something. Ask your host to either switch to php7 if they havent already, or transfer your account into a php7 enabled one. The impact on speed is great and you'll have a better starting point.
Then, also ask them if they can implement a caching module...
Switch to php 7 on your host, you will see big improvements.
Apart from that, you can enable caching inside the Apache configuration and use either APC/Memcache or something similar.
You can also decrease the number of external calls from your page ( if any ) and the amount of file requests...

Make an EXHAUSTIVE list of things you NEED, WANT, and COULD do.
