Yeah, best not to send junk traffic or links directly to any conversion/money site directly: better to send it to a buffer page (About or Facebook/Twitter) page with high authority that can handle the garbage without taking a hit: then link those buffer pages to your money site.

Well, the fact that you're not picking up his backlinks means he's probably using something like SpyderSpanker or otherwise blocking spiders from picking those up. So there's something to learn from him right there.
