I don't understand why keeping track of the ranking takes up a lot of time for a lot of people.. just make sure that you have high quality content and check with google webmasters to see your impressions and CTR for your keywords. That's all you need :)

What you describe is learning, not failing. You just have to keep trying, try all kind of different things and don't give up on one fast. Keep trying and you'll find what works for you. Everyone has a different set of skills and has to learn how to make money with them. It's not the same thing...
