I think they tweak traffic to balance adsense /adwords clickthrough or something like that. there is no reason to other than this imho.

traffic comes from 1 keyword. same serp position, used 3 different stats systems. I can confirm a 60% traffic drop and as well lower convertions. This is definitely a proof of G traffic throttling, it seems G is now dynamically changing the serp positions to balance the traffic against its algo.
