Yep, it can be frustrating. I really hope Google goes too far and someone like Facebook (or anyone) comes out with a search engine with minimal ads. Or, people get fed up and switch. I'm not hopeful though, just a wish...

Google's keyword planner, though not completely accurate anymore, is useful and helpful. It is especially interesting to see what other words Google consider relevant. SEMrush and longtailpro are useful, but can be expensive for some.

In my experience, PA is more relevant than DA in this case. I have found it easier to outrank sites with low PAs, even if they have high DA. I have found Google's Keyword Planners competition metric to be almost worthless.
