I do whitehat at my normal day job at a digital agency as my boss is very risk averse and so are my clients (law firms). On my personal sites, I'm blackhat all the way!

You can rank any generic TLD (Top Level Domain) in any country, and Google doesn't treat them differently from .com, but people do tend to trust .com sites more than .biz, .net etc due to the historic association of those types of sites with spam.
