Let's be honest, getting rank is not just LINK. Good content, Related Keyword, No duplication and many factors have influence on your page. Perhaps your page is more relevant for a keyword you already rank for, compare to those you build a link.

If you don't want to pay for theme, there is many free theme. Go for them but not nulled. I had four websites down in 2013 because of using nulled version.
