Hi,

I've noticed several web designers in my area are ranking mostly because they have built ******** links in the footer of websites they have created for clients. I was under the impression footer links are low quality links and were mostly ignored by the search engines. So am I wrong or are they ranking since they have their brandname on the bottom of many websites? Any tips are greatly appreciated.

its a hit and miss. you never know if your clients try to do seo and fu*k it up.

but they have added a lot of power for branded links so heres your answer

i have a client which ha some footer links of really good pages and the help him a lot. So they are ok and will not harm you .. if the page is good it will be a nice positive effect.

I have a website that is top half of page 1 for a high competition keyword and it is ranked 100% with exact match footer links. It works great. I did this as an experiment and decided to let it run in perpetuity as a "Canary in the Coal Mine" test. If google ever devalues footer links or exact match anchor text I will see the site drop and I will raise the alarm here on BHW. The test has been running for over 2 years now. I keep waiting for the hammer to drop but it hasn't happened yet.

@validseo yeah imagine having an exacth match domain, which should allow you to have way more branded links, which are your emd by the way.

Usually if done right footer links won't cause any issues and may actually help pageranks in my experience. If done wrong, well like anything done wrong you'll regret the footer links.

sure? then he will have 0,1% keyword density ...

Footer links are ranking a lot of top sites right now. Footer / sidebar links. Once vilified, have now returned to full effect.

Do the footer links need to be topically related as in the same niche or same city to still hold value?

I have footer links totally not related to my niche tbh I dont care that site hardly makes anything anyways and he paid good money for those links I'd have more if people wanted links there but *shrug*

Maybe having a site you don't care about but use #seo tag on twitter might attract some people wanting to put backlinks on your site? Wouldn't risk it on a main one though. It only takes a flip of a google switch to de-rank hard.
