Crazy Google Dance In The Last 24 Hours

I think there may be a simple answer to what they are attacking, it's indirectly down to me partly but only because I shared my genius idea, that was tweeted by Rand Fishkin, and then every man and his dog was doing it.

1) Expired domains with pre-existing high value links - these have ended up being used in PBNs, and of course old sites will have old links from the same pages the expired domains have links from.

Google start to tackle the problem of old high value links to expired domains in 2 ways:

i) Devalue the expired domains.
ii) Reach out to some of the big boys, e.g. the BBC and get them to clean up their old pages and remove links to duff websites - they could clearly either send them a list of pages that need editing, or devalue those old news pages themselves.

I have noticed that some of the old domains I had with excellent old BBC links - those very old (10 years+) pages no longer contain the outbound links any more - so they must have been edited.

This hits PBN's, and old established sites whose rankings were also based on years old high value links.

In other words Google have added "freshness" of the high value links into the equation.

2) Kill sites with little useful content but lots of ads - so an "ads to word count (or some other measure) to user interaction" metric to get rid of people trying to make money by not offering anything useful.

If you think about it 1) and 2) are interconnected, since the people involved in (1) are often just trying to earn money by doing (2).

I think that makes a lot of sense, but I expect people will scoff at me just like they did when I first suggested that expired domains with high value links were like gold dust for rankings, and so I won't be sharing my new methodologies with anyone since that's what kiled the golden goose above.

Soo recovery will be more PBNs to rank higher again

The simple reality is that Google HAS to rely on links to create a list of search results.

Simplistically - their "AI" machine or whatever might know green, and blue, and red, and purple are colours, but it has never seen them - simple single words that any Human can understand - it doesn't actually know what they represent.

Then you have the nuances of language - the same string of words, depending on the context of the surrounding words, can have 3 or more different meanings. It doesn't understand language.

Then suppose we both sat down to "rank" 100 books on quantum physics (since books are to Humans as websites are to Google) - since neither of us know anything about quantum physics, or even could understand it if we wanted to - how can we do that?

We'd need to defer our judgement to Steven Hawking or some other genius, or CERN, and see which books he/they recommend/s (or websites he links to).

Until Google have a machine that can actually understand all of the above, and is an expert in every conceivable subject or search string, then links will always be a NECESSITY.

When they do finally have that machine your rankings in Google will be the least of your worries, since it will kill us all within 10 seconds of reaching that state.

So yes, for now - you need better quality links than you had previously, since some of them now count for exactly zero, or maybe less than zero.

This is a good thread, we need to understand what this update was all about. I am still yet to see something definitive. Some site without links stay stable whereas others are affected.

A site without links has no links to be devalued - therefore it cant lose rankings.

In my opinion, it's not that simple.

Sites without PBNs got hit. Sites with PBNs got hit.

Sites with ads got hit. Sites without ads got hit.

Old sites got hit. New sites got hit.

So damn confusing, I give props to anyone who can find a clear pattern in this mess.

Sites with PBNs got hit - that had very old high value links
Sites without PBNs got hit - that had very old (natural) high value links? - check that out.
Sites with ads or without ads - are a subset of the main 2 conditions above.

No ads but very old high value links - hit
Ads and very old high value links - hit
No ads and no old high value links - not hit
Ads and no very old high value links - not hit.

PBN or no PBN in the 4 examples above don't matter - it's if the PBN had old high value links or not.

You could be right, there's just no way to know for sure.

For example, my site had minimal ads w/ topically relevant guest posts on high authority sites. No PBNs. It got hit.

At the end of the day, only those at Google will ever know.

I could also be wrong - it's just an idea, and since the expired domains with BBC links thing really took off I've been waiting for them to hammer it.

Maybe that hammer is yet to fall and this is something else, or a combination of different things to confuse people so they can't work out how to overcome it.

If I were Google that's what I'd do - save up 2 or 3 or 4 or more things that need fixing and hit the lot at once - then no one can make head nor tail of it.

I also think theres a timey wimey wibbly wobbly thing going on too (here - https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/googles-wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey-thing.924684/).

just my two cents:

I am using expired domains with high value backlinks (also BBC etc. you name it). Many websites. On every homepage I had around 500 words of content. Simple money sites, not much interlinking, not much outbound linking. No ads at all, just some affiliate links. None of these sites dropped instead they rise (maybe because competition got hit).

ttmschine his statement/opinion is really interesting and I completely agree with many things on how googles algorithm works (and how it doesnt work), but this update doesn't really seem to have any pattern. I also have friends which never bought or build a single PBN link, had a fresh domain and now two years after they registered and used them the domain suddenly get hit. They have no idea why and whats going on and so do I.

Managed to fix Fred with Daphne and he left my blogs alone

We are back in business baby.

What I did:

1. Anchor text dilution
2. Disavowed bad links
3. Reduced OBL count on pages.

Tagging @alvaroj and @Scorpion2 who requested the progress :)

OBL = Outbound Links

By 1 to 5% do you mean you have exact match anchors or phrase match of that percentage?

Dropped it from 50% to 20%

Now over ahrefs, (droped) end of the link, forum links in total disavow 31 links.

How many days did your website come back?

Is this good? Mines below 20

Hi @TheGreene, I am afraid that there is no exact percentage which works for everyone. I suggest you drop your percentages down some more from their current position and keep track of the results. Start with two to three articles instead of the whole site.

Avoid exact match anchors unless you have a really powerful link.

One way you can take advantage is using your keyword near your anchor text instead of shoving too many keyword rich and exact match anchors on Google's face.
