Being an unemployed Programmer.

Hey Guys, I need to tell a story.

I live in Berlin Germany and studied Computer Science. When I started my studies in 2012, everbody was telling me, that I can get a Job everwhere, because Coders are needed all over the world, and the demand is way higher than the number CS Students.
During my studies I tried to get a job as a working student. But had no success. Last year I finished my studies successfully, but could't manage to get a job. The companies always tell me, that I don't have enough working experience. So I had to apply for social welfare, last year in December.

Now I have met some of my former fellow students. Nobody has a job.

Is that only the Situation in Germany or is there no more demand for coders?

All you need to do is partner up with the right companies an you can keep a steady flow of work coming in. Look on sites like upwork and Here. Post some samples of your work.

Offer to do something free to build up a client base.

Cold call all programing companys till you get hired

Programmers are always in demand, but like in any job you do need experience especially if you have none. But for programmers you can get away it with building a portfolio of your work. Build example websites using the latest tech like React , Node.js, CSS (LESS), Databases(post, nosql). And you will be fine with getting small gigs, and it is all about getting more experience after then.

Figure out if you want to be a front end, backed end developer or full stack.

This is how I know lots of people got job like myself, and they didn't even have CS 4 year degree they just did those boot camps or one year programming diploma. Build your Portfolio!

No matter of the job, companies only hire workers who are able to complete specific tasks. Are you able to? What are your skills? Graduating an university doesn't automaticlaly make you a good coder. Create a few personal projects first, to add them to your portfolio. Or start working for a company without wage or for minimal wage, to gain experience. Cold calling all programming companies is a good idea.

I am a former Flash Developer. During the better days of Flash, I did some stuff like this

It's a Interactive Signage App (Interactive Info terminal), which is now widely used in Southern Germany. But stupid younger me sold the rights for a couple thousand bucks.
That was my biggest project, that took 2 years. Good times back then.

What kind of education was it? If you can get a Business Intelligence exstension or a similar data analyzing which is in demand right now then maybe that is an option.

If jobs are scarce use your skills in another way.

Create the product for yourself as create for another.

Find a need, figure out how to solve that problem using your skills, and sell that to those that have that need.

If you can turn the product you create into a subscription as opposed to a one off you'll be able to build an increasing residual income and will probably be in a better spot long term than if you did get a job.

I can say that Sweden is hungry for developers - we even import them from Denmark due to the extensive need.

Unfortunatelly, school doesn't teach how to solve real life problems. Lived in Germany for a while and I know this problem. For people with zero experience there are 2 possibilities, both implying "start from the ground up":
1) get an internship
2) DIY study and start freelancing
Nobody really cares about a diploma if it has nothing spectacular attached to it. As an employer, now, I wouldn't hire some guy just because there's a paper flown on my desk. You don't know shit, after all, not because they fail to teach you in school, but because you didn't care about shit at all.
No fancy words, no harsh feelings. The truth.

That's seems very odd. The demand is massive in the UK. We just took a Dev on for his first professional commercial role on £30,000.

You can start to gain experience by publishing your own open source code here https://github.com/. This is something that prove you knowledge. Although, it will not be a professional work experience, your own effort will be regognized by many companys and you will have the chance to make a start

I will be honestly: I think you aren't good enough programmer. I'm from neighbour country, and I see there is no available good coders for projects, all programmers are full of works. Tons of guys go to Germany, Switzerland for 6 figure payments.
Learn more, will be better, do some self promotions, and you'll get fantastic jobs.

He might be good but just not able to sell himself in interviews maybe?

You should build stuff people can use to get your name out. Use github and help people with their projects. Programming is a tough gig because companies dont necessarily need someone in house to do the work, nor do they need to find someone in Berlin. My brother in law moved to Berlin working for native instruments in the design department. They have moved him to LA now. You need to be out there to get hired. Similarly dont just look for jobs in Berlin. Other than that dont just rely on finding a job. Start building your own stuff to monetize. Connect with people, build stuff together.

Hmm... not true, we are receiving at least 5-7 CV's every week from unemployed programmers. So the claim that unemployed programmer not good programmer is B.S.

P.S: 4 out of 5 have great skills based on portfolio and CVs
