Did you make changes to your site during this time? Or did you just let your site sit for a month and your rankings naturally came back?

I did nothing. When I started to lose ranking in late September, I had no idea what was going on until they announced in October that Penguin is live and has become a part of their core algorithm. At that time since most of my links were ( and are) PBN there was nothing I could do but sit and wait and see what will happen. Eventually, I got my ranking back, for some keywords even better :) Seeing a big update like this one there will be a collateral damage and things will be all over the place for a while as the algo needs to recalculate a new ranking score. Obviously, the sit and wait attitude won't work for everyone. As it depends on the kind of website and content quality they have.

P.S. During this update only 2 of my posts are jumping up and down. That's why given the nature of my links I strongly believe that this update has more to do with content rather than links.

According to their patent the algorithm sends the site to hell and waits a few days, the user will then disavow all the links he bought because knows which ones it is, then they decide where the site comes back.

Yep, it's called rank transition and there is some great evergreen article about how it works on http://www.seobythesea.com/2012/08/google-rank-modifying-spammers-patent/ Not sure if it comes into play for "Fred", looks more like the update is not link related at all.

Thanks I couldn't remember the name. This effectively means that during the updates they clean up a bunch of spam just because there's a update!

Perhaps updates are part of the antispam effort? People start turning each other in and disavowing their purchased links LOL. And sending each other desperate hysterical emails by gmail LOL.

Must be fun working at Google

What's hysterical are the people coming up with any theory just to justify something without any substance.
 
The bunch of indians with families were denied to enter US so their buddies took revenge and screw into instant loop the Google's SERP. Today it makes no sense what is going on except to think they started celebrate April's Fool day 2 weeks earlier.
 
its not effect alot because most of my rankings are stable and some of are getting benefits.
 
the new update called "fred" it been done without notice same as february's,

still awaiting news what got changed.

dup articles << possibly know
pop ups << feb
pop unders << feb

anyone no anything else add it please?
 
It's been a bit different for me - I didn't see anything happen when this went live, but gradually day by day I've lost a page 1 ranking here, and another few there, until today when I looked I only had 11 left.

Last week I had 26.

I haven't seen any massive drops in rank just a drip, drip, drip over time - down a spot here, few spots there, etc.

Then I ran my rank checker again 15 mins ago (2nd time this morning), and I've jumped from 11 to 17 page 1 rankings.

I think the serps are in a massive state of flux, I hope mine comes back, will let you know.
 
According to algoroo, things have settled but there's still some dancing in my serplab.. so overall how was the update for everyone? It was pretty bad for me, lost almost 2 of my sites, not sure if they'll ever return in serps..
