I highly doubt it's wishful thinking, there are algorithms to analyze the complexity of a text for example, readability and much more. You underestimate the power of big data, if you feed the right algorithms with enough data to compare, they are still far from human perception, but detecting the fingerprint of generic low quality content doesn't require artificial intelligence or similar.
Think what you want then, but so long as the page has all of the markers of "legit" content, i.e. the right keywords, LSI, topics etc, Google will rank the page.
