If Google snooped in on people's emails to find out if they were buying links that would be massively illegal and they'd have a law suit on their hands.

I'm not gonna argue over this one more time.

Just go and use Gmail and buy links then.

it wouldnt be really that illegal. google is even encouraged to spy on you by CIA and usa government. same goes to facebook/twitter/windows etc. of course they wont make use of it in your case because you are not important, but they collect massive data just to make it available for government when they need it. microsoft was spotted including illegal backdoors and spying features and nothing changed at all. they probably get good $ from government as well for doing that.

FYI: Gary Illyes posted a tweet this morning:
"DYK there's no inherent problem with affiliate links? The problem is when a site's sole purpose is to be a shallow container for aff links"

My clients sites got hit, not aff links.

After yesterdays god awful article, I wouldn't even bother giving a link to the dribble seoroundtable post

This is the most consistent theme I've seen from Fred: the sites were "shallow containers." Many of them contained zero ads -- but the sites plainly existed to do absolutely nothing but to pick up potential customers. They used to rank as an informational page. Now they rank just for commercial queries.

Certainly i was joking, i will disavow the shitty links i've built to my site then i will post the results

are you sure? cause that sounds like shitty idea

u must be 200% sure that these links are shitty and causing the drop

also, in any case if you have bad links pointing on your site you jsut ignore it and make a lot of good ones. this way u dont break anything like a nub

That's exactly what I'm saying, genius. Google scans a page and looks for semantic relations (LSI - other words used often by sites in the top results / other words their algorithm thinks are relevant) etc. It cannot tell what is "good" or "bad". That's wishful thinking from someone who puts way too much faith in G. Normal spinning, i.e. just using synonyms in single-words is fairly easy for them to detect, but high-level spinning and content generation is virtually impossible. Am I saying you should use it on money sites? Obviously not. But the idea that G is some magic "human" machine is pure idiocy. I know for a fact, you're wrong.

You don't think google have any way else of determining if a site is made of quality content or not?
No matter how well you spin a sites content and no matter how well your LSI is, you'll get a high bounce rate because no one want to read your crap. You'll also get a low page count view and a short amount of time spent on the site overall from all visitors. It's a dead giveaway. To even believe that some people think that G is some magic "human" machine is pure idiocy.
I totally agree with dbanjo.. As soon as word count comes into the picture, then chances are that you are building shit sites.

user signals are important. install google analytics on your site and you will get penalty if average time per session is 30 seconds. dont install it = you are more safe, they have less possibilities of scanning user signals.

however they are still important. i usually lock visitors with content lockers or time lockers. about backlinks, its probably one of factors too, but you would need to create interesting content for your tier 1 so they actually stay. its wayyyy too pointless doing this on masive scale is just not possible. or maybe it is, but you would have to hire content writers and pay them hourly.

i do in some blackhat niche so no one cares about user signals of backlinks. heh, they dont even care of moneysite user experience. but there are way more important factors than user signals of a backlink, loll

Today I can see in GSC that the missing data from 9th March is now displayed - I wonder if it's not some kind of fuck up rather than an update

Having no affiliate links doesn't mean that one is immune from google updates.
I wasn't saying my sites were immune to google updates in any way.

What I am saying is he is talking shit. Providing you give google what they want, you can make your site "shallow containers", affiliate links or not.

You sir are an absolute idiot to assume the content is there to read, and not just to rank our offer sites.

Paying customers care more about seeing a comparison chart of the aff products in certain niches, then reading your "super high quality" articles.

Keep wasting your money and time writing articles whilst I build sites. I'm waiting for your 5$ a day journey thread.

what really causes this i think its pbn .. google is aftering pbn lol

Why don't you read my post and the previous posts in regards to what I wrote and try to understand the entire context, dumbass.

I still need a whole lot more convincing that this update has anything to do with links.

I have sites which basically share a database, so quite a lot of content is shared between them all, whilst the rest is custom written. All titles, headings and specific page content is unique aside from the stuff pulled from the database (basically products).

The niche for all sites is fairly similar, as is the level of competition. These sites were all performing reasonably well - and none had any links built by me (several have picked up some random, low quality links ('seocheckup', 'webcheck' type links for example - both ones which have been hit and ones which are fine, so this doesn't seem to be a cause).
Now some of them have been hit, and others have not. Competitor sites also tend to have very little in the way of backlinks and the sites I have that are still ranking fine don't have any either, so I find it difficult to believe that my sites could have been devalued to this extent simply due to a lack of links.

I am unable to place my finger on what I feel is the reason for these sites losing their positions. However, if I had to take a guess I would suggest that the ones hit probably err more on the side of onsite over-optimisation than the ones which have survived unscathed. I am making a few onsite tweaks to one of the ones hit to see if this improves things. I am leaving the others to wait it out.

Guys I wanna know how do you check rankings of your sites? What tools do you use?
Semrush or any other & is it paid subscription or free one?

I understand the context.

I just don't think you know what you are talking about.
