Noob question please...I found out that my site with average 45% bounce rate and 3 minute duration rank super high with minimal SEO effort.

Does Duration and bounce rate really matter?

It's a factor (https://moz.com/rand/queries-clicks-influence-googles-results/), but it's only one factor. Your competitors might have high bounce rates too.

They daily dilbert comic strip ranks very well and has a 99% bounce rate and < 1 minute duration. I'd say that Dilbert is highly successful and Google agrees. So the question is what makes the difference? Well the Dilbert page terminates the search meaning that people don't continue clicking links in the search results for the same search term and Dilbert has high degree of repeat visitation... so people keep coming back to that result. The bounce rate and duration from Google Analytics actually don't matter and are more descriptive of the nature of the content and not its quality.

As validseo pointed out it also depends on the type of site you have.
Search engines are getting smarter and smarter and this is one way in which this reflects on SEO.

It is a small factor, but you can't fake it. Also 45% is a fair bounce rate on most niches so I wouldn't worry. 3:00 isn't bad either.
