Stung by Spora Ransomware - Bastard!

Think i've successfully got rid of it from the PC

Interestingly it seems only wordpad files are affected, all the text in those files is encrypted while text in notepad files remains as it was.

Can access all programs, videos, images etc.

The only way i got rid of it ,was thru system restore point, but still then i wiped and start agin just encase.

There's a few different types of ransomware. The one I got affected multiple types of files but targeted certain areas first.

Back up as much shit as you can anyway just in case.

If you find tomorrow that you didn't completely clean your system you at least have backups and can wipe your system.

Let's just hope I never have to deal with that. Thankfully though, the external hard drive isn't usually connected to the PC. It's just there for when I need to add new stuff to it.

Malwarebytes premium has a ransomware preventing feature. How effective it is im not sure, Trend Micro have a downloadable program to decrypt files but as of yet they dont decrypt spora encryptions.

Malwarebytes premium exists somewhere in the download section of BHW for free

Storytime. There was one guy who did this ransomware shit with twist. He bought bunch of cheap USB sticks from China, like hundreds. He uploaded his ransomware onto the sticks. Then he made huuuge list of educational institutions (high schools etc) and looked for names of important people connected to those institutions. Then he wrote names on those USB sticks and added label "if found, please return to....".

He named his randsomware.exe to whatever could raise enough curiosity (private wedding pictures etc) and added some filler files etc.

He dropped those sticks in front of schools in the early morning and not by himself. He gave some money to homeless people. He never revealed his face. I think you can assume what happened next.

I hope I didnt give some of you here some brain food to do bad things. Its just a story.

That sucks dude. I know some sites have decryption keys for a large number of the viruses but aside from that, if you don't have a backup of your data I think there aren't many options.

If it's important just suck it up and pay the $79 or if not wipe your computer and consider it a lesson learned.

Just get a USB drive or an ftp server and back up and zip your data every 30 days or so, then you are covered.

Glad to hear you didnt lose some important files, this is fucking crazy, I heard about such stories just by random online news but never thought it is that notorious, I should backup all my things once in a while.

my company got hit by ransomware twice. The ransomware could spread in LAN if you have shared folder on local network. Luckily I always backup all company important files in a disconnected external hard disk. I guess both ransomwares are wrote by Russian because there is a few lines of codes to prevent russian language windows getting infected.

Anti-ransomware can't actually detect new type of ransomwares, so it's better to backup important files regularly. I edited group policy so that .exe/.zip/.rar/.7zip couldn't execute in certain folders (temp folder etc.)

so it's better to backup important files regularly.

when i worked in an IT shop i had to deal with people that lost a ton of important stuff because they simply didn't back it up.
at least twice a week i had too break the news that their important docs, family photos and more was gone and lost due too hardware of software issues. (yes we did data recovery but in a lot of cases that just doesnt work)

If you care about it, back it up. if its important back it up twice.
on the cloud, on a external HDD or other pc or even print it out.
