Stop thinking about your website for a moment and let's do a thought experiment. Imagine three websites:
- Buddha -- literally Buddha, or Yoda, or Jesus, or whatever -- starts a blog and posts wisdom and advice every two weeks.
- A person sets up a website to describe a real and ridiculously useful thing they've learned, like a totally legitimate and scientifically proven method for having a perfect body with nothing more than slight changes in diet and exercise.
- A company sells an insanely great product, like a desktop cold fusion box.
Don't just breeze through this exercise. Spend an hour on it. A day. Hell, a week.
That backlink profile is not going to look like 500 web 2.0s.
Depending on what your money site is intended to do, you're trying to emulate one or more of those. PBNs aren't magical, but they emulate a real organic link: a high-authority, high-trust domain describing and linking to something. Guest posts aren't magical either, but they emulate a real organic link: a niche-related site with a lot of authority for a particular topic describing and linking to something relevant to that topic.
Getting back to your site, the problem for you personally is that, if you don't have PBNs or Guest posts, how are you doing to have links that look to Google like the real organic links that an awesome blog, or how-to site, or product site would get? I guess as an alternative you could (1) beg every website in the Alexa Top 1000 for a link and (2) google your money term and beg every result in the top 100 for a link. But that probably won't work for anyone... hence the PBNs and the Guest posts.
Just as a little sidebar to what @Banditoseo said above regarding emulating organic backlinks, and web 2.0s in particular.
I never understood some people's love affair with web 2.0s. As in "I'm going to set up a PBN of 25 web 2.0s." How is that in any way the basis for creating a realistic backlink profile?
Look over the backlink profile of some *real* sites - site's that are legitimate, real businesses that gained their backlinks naturally. You can find sites with hundreds of backlinks, and sometimes very few or even *none* of them are from web 2.0s.
Probably nothing wrong with creating a few web 2.0s and linking to your money site. But to have all, half, or even 1/4 of your money site backlinks coming from free web 2.0s? Got to be one of the most unnatural linking patterns around, and a pattern that I would think Google would easily and quickly slap down in some way.

Yeah I see your point. I have actually invested in 190 PBN posts. I was asking what else works other than PBN's and guest posts. Hence the devil's advocate reference. I mean, if my site doesn't rank with the PBN's and other links I've built for variety, surely the answer isn't more PBN's?

What % are home page / deep page links? What % are branded anchor versus exact match versus partial match versus LSI?

Currently about 350 homepage and 350 over 3 internal pages.
exact match around 20% each for 4 targeted keywords on each page, and 20% url I think. They're not all showing up in webmaster tools yet. The site is only 3 weeks old.

The site is only 3 weeks old. Your rankings right now don't tell you much about the success/failure of your linking techniques.
I built some links a month ago to rank a particular term on an old, well-established domain. Two days ago, the site shot up from the bottom of the second page to the top of the first page.
All the linking advice in the world isn't going to help you if you don't learn some patience.

Yeah you're right. The reason that I'm asking though is because I want to start and continue correctly. Not spend a few months doing everything wrong, then ask for advice and have to correct everything, If I hadn't messed things up by that stage.

Understood. Honestly, what you need first is to do an analysis of your competitors' backlinks. Find a tool you like, and pay less attention to generic link building advice and more attention seeing what competitors have. Sure, you won't see PBNs, but you'll see the basics, the niche directories, the comments, etc, that link to it. No one knows the perfect backlink profile, but we can see the bulk of the links that Google likes for a particular result.
