is footer backlinks still working?

Hello,

my main competitors are using footer back-links, but when i was searching i found its not good to use it.

and when i used it after 1 month i found nothing change at the keyword i used.

and i can't compete them using small baclink strategy, because they have ton of back links from all the websites they are in the footer.

any suggestions ?

We typically don't recommend footer links because they are site wide and can cause issues with over-optimization of anchor text.

Try to get a backlink within the content area of the page.

Here's the problem. Google tends to devalue :

• Site-wide, boilerplate anchors
• Anchors in the footer
• Over-optimized anchors

Since Penguin, these three have been pounded especially hard.

If you do build footer links, I'd try NOT to build them to your homepage. If you ever incur a penalty and need to "cut" the links, it's very hard to return a 404 from your homepage.

Also, generic, branded or complete URLs are "safest" for sitewide links, because they aren't over-optimized.

I wouldn't really say they work. Sape for example is completely dead in my opinion and has been for quite some time. Out of the footer link you may get what? 10 - 20% of the link juice you would normally get from a contextual link? If you can always go for contextual links and for long term projects I do not advise any footer links whatsoever. It can veeeery easily raise red flags.

I wouldn't really say they work. Sape for example is completely dead in my opinion and has been for quite some time. I've been working with sape for good 3 years and over a year ago, I haven't seen any benefit from them whatsoever. That was I think even prior to Penguin 3.0, not alone now.

And I have tried everything. Whatever sites, internal links, homepages, high TF, english only, top TLDs only, anything. Effect was almost non existent. It's not really hard for Google to catch up with Sape type of links. Unrelated web, non-contextual links, your anchor in company of viagra, cialis and who knows what else. Not too hard to minimize whatever link juice those links can provide.

And that combination with other link types used to work, sure and I've been doing it always like that, but for quite some time now, sape type of links don't do shit. Especially when I compare the benefit with risk of using them, that's no brainer. I would rather invest in some different type of link for sure. For tier 2... maybe, but that's a waste of money to me.

I am Slovak and I can read Russian no problem, no worries. I had a list of pff... hundreds of high TF sites with great metrics. I've spent countless hours there. And no, I've never worked with those, but saying that PBNs are jokes compared to them is a bit farfetched. I wouldn't touch them after Penguin 3.0 and I wouldn't even get close after Penguin 4.0.

I'm Bulgarian and I read and speak Russian very well. Having a list means you had nothing because links metrics change a lot. I'm not saying PBNs are jokes, I said PBNs compared to the contextual SAPE links are jokes.
For example, 99.9% of the people go for English language links. All of them are abused and overused. Also, most people when hear Russian language and .ru domains think Putin is going to knock on the door.

I would rather get one niche related contextual link on article from 2003, instead of spun or re-written article on PBN domain that was re-created 20 days ago. I just gave you gold digging tips in one sentence.

Just by looking the above comments the power tilts towards SAPE You may know what I mean but try it, it is not farfetched.

Not to derail the thread (I agree that footer links still work fwiw), but does SAPE have English contextual links? I've been using it for a while and still get decent results with just the footer / sidebar links.
