Why VPS services are not the best option long-term.

It also wouldn't last very long leaving it ln 24/7 with extensive use.

Well, if you run things on your own machine, you would need another machine to hold the backups incase of a HDD failure on your main one. Thats just one thing that you need other the machine itself.

There are lot of other things that you would need to do it reliably, which is why we have hosting firms, because people found it is cheap that way for a perfect setup.
 
You'll also definetly need a really good cooling system if you want it to last long enough

I included a Noctua in the build, literally a beast of a cooler, I have one personally

Why do you even need such complicated calculations? It's straight up easy math. How much did you buy your PC, compared to how much the VPS cost each month using the same spec x12 months, is enough to tell that VPS for long term is going to cost more.

The average PC is 300$ for a core i3 8GB. And 350$ for 16GB. If you trust 2nd hand parts, it can be had even cheaper.

The average cost of 4 core 8gb is 25$ and so 1 year = 300$ (and mind you, not every reseller is selling you true cores. They may have just given you the HT not core, and you can't always abuse it 100% on all cores. True cores is double the price. Because if they have given you true cores, and the CPU is 12 core, they can only fit in 3 users, so why would they undersell?

The real cost is not the GB sold, as ram is generally cheap (although some providers tend to think ram is good justification for overpricing). It should be measured by the CPU core, that's the most important aspect of running any bot.

I just whipped up a computer at around the spec that I would use. When you've built the PC, investing in more ram is a tiny fraction of the cost.

i would never run this at home. chances of getting caught are way too high and losing all hardware after constant use.

Personally I have a NAS setup to automatically back-up my files etc, but I have only ever had one drive fail on me, and that was a 1tb HDD

Personally, I always pay up front and pay my small sim-only contract, as opposed to paying more in the long-run
 
I don't want my personal IP anywhere near the stuff my VPS's do on a daily basis.
 
Its actually even cheaper for the electricity you aren't going to be going anywhere close to 600 watts an hour for just doing IM tools.

Still means my ISP track the sites etc the comp logs in to. With the snoopers charter law just passed in the UK, that would make me lose sleep for sure.
 
Even running 5 VPSs on a machine like you want to do, is not going to draw close to 600 watts. Under full load the system is going to be using at most 300 watts.
My computer uses around 650 of my 800
 
My pc running 5 years 24x7 for IM tools I made a lot money no need vps
 
The problem for me is not the machine but the internet. I can't get 1gbps in my country.
Same goes for me. I have around 10mbps connection in my country but in my area for 10mbps without FUP I will have to pay around $80-$100 PM so best would be to go for a VPS.
 
If your website would make a couple hundred of dollars, would you risk hosting it on a $10 droplet rather than getting a nice $50 MANAGED vps?

And have you took in consideration the potential downtimes by power drops, components fail rate, ISP dump?

Also, what you have completely OVERLOOKED in your equation is the customer support.

For e.g since you took Host Stage in equation, as I used them, I can vouch for their amazing, sometimes instantly customer support.

A dump caused by a disk failure( which I've seen at quite a few providers to happen), can be fixed in minutes on a vps, while it could take days/weeks for a replacement in the case of a homemade server.

Getting a tiny server at home would be great only perhaps for the excitement of having it, but this is not a factor to take in consideration long term.
 
Ok, a lot of people have been talking about ISPs Power, and SDD failure during the thread, so I'll address that now.

I would say that, over the course of a year, my area sees 2-3 power cuts of no more than 48 hours, this equates to a 98.36% uptime. if that is not good enough for you, then you may consider buying an uninterruptible power supply, like this one, for a small cost.

As for possible data loss, having a NAS setup with 3 HDDs setup to do one backup per day on each would be more than fine.

When it comes to ISPs you could easily purchase a dedicated business line. I use a shit ton of data across my devices, and I have never had a message from anyone saying there is a problem.

Stuff not running for those outages more than cover costs of boxes for some people. There are many different reasons to use VPS/Dedi's:

- Slower Internet Speeds/Stability Issues
- The Odd Power Cut/Blackout (UPS doesn't help you if ISP infrastructure is out too)
- Travel to Different Countries or Move Often
- Caps on outgoing Bandwidth from ISP
- ISP warns you for "unusual/malware activity" crawling/scraping/using proxies to run massive amounts of automated queries
- Easily scalable or Expendable With No Big Commitments or Up Front Investments
- Apt/Home Space Limitations

.... and a bunch of other reasons listed in the thread, it may not make sense for you but everyone has a unique situation. Personally I love being able to grab a bag, passport; roll to the airport in the drop of a hat & manage my stuff from anywhere.

I also don't think you're factoring in that your equipment will be old in 2-4 years, while a server can be running latest gen hardware with no replacement costs to you.


//EDIT: @Capo Dei Capi Certainly could certainly be for some people, probably more for hosting side of things but not sure about rack space/electricity/bandwidth costs at decent DC's. Personally a lot of my projects are volatile so while I may have 10 servers today for a project they may not be needed next month if things went south & I suspect a lot of other people are the same way.

Wouldn't colocation be the best of both worlds ? You get to cut costs by purchasing the server outright and then just pay for the maintenance costs such as electricity and internet.
 
I would rather stick to a VPS but still this is something I might give a go in the future.
