About choosing anchor text

Hi, dear all,

I am pondering how to choosing proper anchor text. I am new to SEO, and now struggling with choosing correct anchor text in links building, because my superior and my colleagues have different theories.

For example, I work for an e-commerce company called BIG, and the website is BIG. com
Then pet supplies are best-seller and I am asked to build relevant links .

So, here are a few options (suggested by my colleagues and superior) for me to choose anchor text:
(I am going to promo the site www. BIG. com/ pet-supplies / , for instance)
which anchor text for the site is better:
BIG, pet supplies, BIG pet supplies, cheap pet supplies...(maybe you guys could fill the list with better words)

Again, I am new to SEO, so I don't know if I make my question clear enough or give enough information about my question...but I really need help.

Depends on the keyword you are targeting, but brand related anchor texts I don't find helpful personally. In my situation if you search either of the words associated with our brand we are in the top results. I've also noticed that anchor text diversity hurts my rankings pretty badly, so I don't diversify anymore all of the anchors are exact KW matches, internally and externally(when I can control it). Others preach that you have to diversify so I guess that's going to vary case by case.

So if you already look up BIG and you're the top result, I wouldn't focus on that. People searching for your brand specifically are going to find it. I'd focus your anchors on KWs you want to rank for, and if you need to diversify than just use synonyms and variations of that KW.

Using your example of pet supplies try making a large percent an exact match, then add some variations such as "best pet supplies", "GEO pet supplies", etc

I think I understand most of your words, while I am not so sure if I get some part right.

And the keyword that for ranking up of that site is suggested as "pet supplies".

So you think anchors should exactly match keywords, and I can diversify them, occationally?

Use different combinations of naked and brand most of the time, probably 80% to stay safe. For the rest use different kinds of keyword anchors and generic ones. It so easy to see if a website have unnatural links by looking at their anchors.

Variation is key for me keep them different ...The best method to be sure how to go ahead about is stalk your competition the top 5 rankers analyse how they are doing it see the ratio of their targeting and decide accordingly

Although analizing competitors seems a little challenging for a begainner, I checked some with majestic just now, and find some anchors landing to a particualr page are using their brand names directly.
Now I am confusing one more time:
Using brand name as anchors can rank up the specified keywords that landing to the particular page in the search engine?
Like, the page www. BIG .com/pet- supplies/ , then I use my brand name BIG as anchors, and my keyword "pet supplies" can have higher ranking too?

There are million people with millions of opinions...At the end of day what i have seen is it all comes to authority of your website in eyes of the good..if you mentioned the brand google will crawl the page and know what your landing page is about anyways and i you have authority you will rank ....So concentrate on quality and authority more less on other stuff...but yeah if you don't have authority safest method is keep variation brand name anchor, Naked URL with keyword mentioned beside it , Proper anchor text, LSI
variation speeds up the process...

You don't need exact match anchors to rank for your keyword. Google already know what your page is about.
