I happened to purchase an expired domain that has got really powerful links to it and is in almost the exact same niche as my money site.

Now I did a 301 redirect from this domain to my money site slightly less than 48 hours ago and.. damn the rankings for all directly related keywords dropped like CRAZY!! From like 2nd page to 4th or 5th page. This is MADNESS!!

What do you guys think I should do next? Does it look like a penalty or a dance? I checked GWT for my money site and all looks clear.

This looks like a clear dance. If anything it's a good thing. Just be patient and wait for rankings to recover. Usually will have improved ranking after a dance.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll see how it goes in the next few days.

Let us know approximately how long it takes to bounce back, and become stable again

That must be very strong link damn... I wish I can have power links in the same niche... I'm jealous :D

Did you check archive.org before buying the domain? Hope so, otherwise it could be a poison Chinese domain.

Not even sure whether it's a dance to start with

Good point as from my understanding 301s do pass penalties to the target site right. But yes, I did check archive.org and all looks clear :)

It's just a Google dance mate. It takes some time to settle down. Your ranking will be back within few weeks.

dude there is algo update outgoing everything can change everyone should wait with building links until it is settled

@OP....what is GWT?

and whats this about 301's passing penalties? from what I understand 301's pass on most of ur link juice. its pretty much a redir4ct telling google that this page does not exist here anymore but now here. why should this carry penalties?

Nice case study here, update us op, do you see any change? did the rankings came back?

Also, a few notes, if you dont mind answer:
1. Archive: Did you check it out?
2. Did you build the site as it was once, or just 301 the domain to your new domain
3. 301 via htaccess, every page redirected? or just domain redirected to the new one?
4. Did you redirect www/non-www or- both?

Many ppl talk about 301´s, but there are thousands ways to do it. and every time the outcome is different, based on the site you are redirecting, and the way you do it.

Looking forward to your comments op, and feel free to reach out if you need further advice.

1) Yes, checked archives. All clear for sure.
2) Did not rebuild the site from archives. Just did a 301 to my money site
3) 301ed via htaccess. Every page redirected to my money site Homepage
4) Redirected both www and non-www versions

By now, it has been close to 72 hours since I did the 301. No real changes in the rankings yet, keywords still stuck at the 4th, 5th and 6th pages (down from 2nd page before the 301). Will be updating this thread along the way.

I have the same problem last week, had a website with number 1 rankings, and after the google mashup last week i dropped 22 places in one night, now going up again but very slowly

301s pass penalties because otherwise it would be really easy to build a spammy site, rank it using rubbish links, get penalised, then 301 the old site to a new site. If the penalty didn't pass you would get the link authority from the old (penalised) site, but not the penalty, so new site would rank well. Which would kind of defeat the point of issuing penalties in the first place. Makes sense when you think about it.
