Hey guys,

just recently checked out Google Keyword Planner - can't get to the actual tool unless you purchase ads? Am i retarded please inform me below.

Also on a side note could someone please suggest some great alternatives? If it isn't free, that's fine.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure you need to give them a payment method with your credit card then it should allow you to do it. They won't charge you though, you only need to verify your card and you don't need to start an ad campaign to use it.

I was in the same situation a few years ago and can't remember exactly what I did but after doing this it should let you use the tool.

As for some paid alternatives, I would recommend Market Samurai, SEMrush and Longtail Pro. Unless you have the money, I would play around with GKP and read up on some keyword research tutorials here before getting into paid tools.

Don't remember exactly since I got GKP a long time ago but I don't think you need to purchase ads to use it. I,personally, never did.

Aren't all these tools GKP dependant?

I'm just concerned about the OP spending money without having any idea about keyword research. The paid tools have additional features that GKP can't do and I think that someone should learn a bit about keyword research before getting into paid tools and potentially wasting their money because they are unsure how to get the most out of it. Everyone is different but, I know that if I jumped straight into paid tools knowing what I knew when I first started compared to now there is no way I would have gotten the most out of them.

First of all, I'm not affiliated with this.

You can try RankBrain.me, they are new tool and also have marketplace thread here in BHW: http://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/rankbrain-me-keyword-research-tool-with-machine_learning.871323/

I just tried their service with $1 plan/month, and it seems great. The $1 plan have heavy restrictions, 2 searches per day. LOL. and you don't need to link your adwords account. The seller (@UpSEO ) here in BHW seems not so active though. He is also giving away review for Jr.VIP members. Just contact him.

I am also in the same predicament and I agree with the 1st answer. You only have to put your payment method on Google's file and that would allow you to use GKP. Personally, I use my wife's account since she ran a few ads with Google before.

I might have a solution but it's still just a possibility. I saw a post here a couple months back about obtaining a free VCC. Just not sure if that can be used on GKP. I'll let you know if it worked.

My suggestions are Long Tail Pro and Semrush.

If you want an alternative for Google keyword planner, I would suggest you use Long Tail Pro. This tool isn't free but it's superb and worth the dollars you paid for it.

Here is a free alternative that works for Global, US, UK, CA, AU and ZA data - The Keywords Everywhere browser addon.

How to use it - Once you have the browser add-on installed and the api key activated, click on the "K" icon in the browser bar and go to "Get metrics for my keywords". You can now post as many keywords as you want and get accurate search volume data for it.

I agree on Semrush too.

like, google planner will say something has 300k searches... but semrush will show 0 searches -- and semrush is right.

Hey OP,

Your not the only one facing the problem. I attempted today to do some keyword research and got the following message when I visited the keyword planner tool.

As others have mentioned there are other alternatives, but do your own testing and see which one is the most accurate and best fits your needs!

Try Moz's Keyword Explorer

I have nothing against this tool, but this won't give you a good estimate for search volume. Moz is using their internal method to guesstimate this number. My verification so far saying that they are pulling this from their a**. Right now, the only tool that provides search volume is RankBrain.me. I just learned about this tool recently after running into issue with Keyword Planner
