I was wondering, with the crash of silk road, would using the mighty tor (pun intended) browser still be a good idea or there are alternatives for browsing the dark net?

It depends on what you are using it for, still plenty of dark markets out there. Just remember that there is nothing that provides 100% security and anonymity.

True that! I plan using it mostly for opening twitter accounts and buying bitcoin.
