With your eCommerce website, is there a lot of competition in the niche? Is the niche dominated by well established or high PR websites like Amazon or Walmart? Typically, most eCommerce websites are difficult to rank in Google because the content is very thin or even non-existent. Many of the eCommerce websites that I have seen people build use duplicate content from other websites making them less unique. Even the best backlinking strategy will fail to increase your rankings in those situations.
The first thing you need to do with any eCommerce website is determine A) Who are your customers? and B) Who is your competition for those products? Once you have figured that out, then you can successfully map out a strategy to gain sales. Remember, TARGETED traffic is what you are after to get the kind of conversions that you are looking for.
I have a few important questions for you. Are you selling physical products through a webstore or building a webstore of affiliate products? Are the products that are featured on your eCommerce website unique (handcrafted or your own brand) or can they be purchased through other websites and/or physical stores? Also, you had mentioned geo-specific eCommerce...what is the demand and competition for these products?
I hope that I can be of assistance as I have built many eCommerce webstores for myself and clients.
