Outranking huge sites?? (Possible Niche Idea)

I would like to hear some of you guys take on outranking large sites with certain keywords? How possible is it? How does one go about seeing JUST how optimized this site is for THAT specific keyword?

Lets take for example the keyword "best metal detectors for kids" (dk if this niche is actually good, but I bet some of you are already google planning it. If it is, you're welcome), and lets say for that keyword, some results pop up from HUGE companies that publish a magazine about metal detecting, have a full news blog about metal detecting, etc. The Page that ranks is titled "Top Ten Metal Detectors of 2016" or something similar. What is the chance of outranking this for the "best metal detectors for kids" keyword?

Now lets say the company also ranks for that keyword again but this time the actual title of the page that ranks is "Top ten metal detectors for youngsters" , what are the chances of outranking these sites that only have ONE PAGE optimized for that keyword?

I know about tools such as AHrefs, and all of that, but how can I use it to tell just how much power an authority site has with just one page for one specific keyword like this?

When you search "best metal detectors for kids" and get results just about metal detectors, it is because Google is just trying to supply you with the most relevant, closely related information. The site probably has no cares about ranking for that, so if you target that keyword, build your link profile for that, even as a low authority site you could easily outrank them.
Now for the closer related one "metal detectors for kids" vs "best metal detectors for youngsters", Google has a fairly smart search algorithm, and has set it to recognize that as a good search correlation. It would take a lot more work to rank against the authority site, because they essentially targeted the LSI, that coupled with their authority, makes it harder not impossible.

So my method to see how I can compete against a site, beyond checking their backlinks:
Check their URL: how closely related to the keyword?
How many times can I find that keyword, long tail, LSI keywords in the copy?
How old? If it is an old post(say 2010) for best ____of 2010, then it helps to refresh the content and go for it.
I check the site overall focus: Wikipedia? Metaldetectorsforkids.com? Randomfacts.com? How concentrated is the site to the keyword/topic?
Then I look for their support network, do they have related YouTube videos? Do they have a strong social media presence for this topic? Actively engaged or just posting stuff?

I take all then, then go with my gut.
