I made the mistake before of putting my current address on a few domains, and I was rewarded with a slew of junk mail in my mailbox.

How important is it to use something that hides your real information?

Reading some of the legal info on those services that hide your info, it seems you are transfering ownership of the domain to them.

Depends on whom you are hiding it from. If you are trying to hide it from your competitors, marketers and spammers, you should take whois guard.

If you are trying to hide it from.. umm... let's say nsa.. best of luck, you can't.


Don't put invalid whois data. Your best domain might be seized for nothing.. basically..


Btw, if you are reading about let's say.. mark monitor.. then.. give up.. they are too costly for ur need lol.

How important? That depends on how much you value your privacy and depends if you want you activities easily tracked back to you.

Some of those 3rd party services can be dodgy. You don't want to transfer ownership. Check what service your registrar offer.

It is not hiding, it is actually securing your real information from spammers so that you don't get junk emails, phone calls and salesman at your doorstep. But that information is not hidden from authorities who want to get information about your domain. So don't worry and get a domain whois guard. I don't know any one whose domain has been taken by the registrar after he activates the whois guard.
