What are the advantages of using a Tumblr blog instead of buying an expired domain and creating my own unique WP on it?
There are both advantages and disadvantages to this. However, mix of domains and web 2.0s like Tumblr are a basis of any longer-term diverse SEO campaign.
Here are some advantages/disadvantages from the top of my head. I surely forgot to mention some, but then again, I just woke up, so I am glad that I didn't forget how to breathe lol.
Advantages of Tumblr:
- High authority
- Cheaper
- Easier to prevent footprints
- Rarely, if ever, penalized
- You can spam them on tier 2 without worrying too much about penalties
Disadvantages of Tumblr:
- You are not in the full control and they can get deleted
- You can't customize them as much
Advantages of domains:
- You are in full control
- You can customize these domains however you want
Disadvantages of domains:
- Authority is significantly lower than with Tumblr
- Definitely more expensive, even if you are scraping your own domains
- Necessity to avoid footprints
- Often penalized, you need to check their history thoroughly, but can get penalized and deindexed along the way also
- You can't spam them and not many people actually build links to them on tier 2, apart from the existing ones and if yes, it's just a few
