Debt Collectors Paypal?

Hold up.

I've gotten a ridiculous amount of backlash for my response. Let me clarify how my own situation panned out.

I used my own bank account and social security number attached to my PayPal. I was an idiot kid and let some random pay me $150 to use my eBay account. They rung up over $1,000 in fraudulent sales. Both my eBay and PayPal were shut down. I called PayPal but they didn't believe me.

So I got some emails and panicked because I didn't want my parents finding out.

Then the calls started. I didn't have $1K+ to hand over to PayPal. I didn't know shit about finances at the time, either. So I ignored it. I did NOT use any of my parents' information and my situation did NOT affect them in any way.

So.

OP, if for some reason this could affect your parents' finances negatively, man the fuck up and take responsibility. If you are under 18 and this is 100% your problem, ignore it. I stand by my statement. The financial system for minors in the US is a fickle mistress. They can't physically come after you.

When you turn 18, this shit becomes your problem and can affect you. So stop doing stupid things with your PayPal.

Better?

Since this happened, I've received a four-year college degree in the financial realm, have had six years of experience in various positions in the financial sector, and have gained a ridiculously meticulous grasp on my own personal finances. With the knowledge I have now, I still would have ignored it.

I kinda knew you will play the victim card. I am not saying u r lying but just because you got "wrongly charged" it doesnt mean the OP got charged wrongly too... He said he fcked up but not how he fcked up. At least he admitted that he fcked up. My parents would want me to accept my fault and pay them rather than just scam them. Thats why they raised me. Same goes for most parents. (No hate on you. I am following your case study for long and got it bookmarked. Maybe you should see the situation in a different perspective)

He has freedom to express himself what he feels right... doesn't he??

My parents raised me the same way. Never once in any of my replies did I say I was wrongly charged. I feel as if you didn't read it at all. When I said "I was an idiot kid", I was clearly admitting that I had "fcked" up.

Please respond when you have researched debt collection law and practices in the United States, and your response has a stronger basis than "this is how my parents raised me".

Regardless, this is not my thread, simply one where I voiced my opinion to assist the OP. Something you have yet to do. Please forego the derailing.

Am curious, how'd you fuck up and end up owing $900+ ?

I say tell your parents about it. They'll scold you or give you an ass whoopin' but it's totally better that they know beforehand so if in the future something does happen, you will have their support. If not,try making some cash and ask your friends to pool in some and try paying it back to PayPal and then pay your friends back.
Sherb got away with it but you could get screwed so better safe than sorry.

Sherbz, babe,

Half the people on this thread are fucking idiots. Ignore them.

Ha, thanks.

I have a hard time understanding why people who have zero relation to the situation at hand, and even literally anything relating to the situation, can formulate some angel-on-your-shoulder opinion based on zilch.

Then I realize I'm on an Internet forum and it all makes sense.

I had the same in about 2009, as did my friend we were both under 18 so nothing could be done. I paid mine, he got his mum to ring up and got the debt cancelled. Two options for you

if you can make debt under the age of 18 you cant play the how can i not pay it card
and to advise a user who has messed up the best lesson he could learn is ignore
the debt he made is wrong, let alone play the well your under 18 they cant touch you.
that advocates doing wrong is fine, if u mess plead im a child under 18.

The fact you are under 18 makes this a lot easier, I sold something on PayPal and then the guy did a charge back months later but I had already spent the money. I ended up having to pay, if you don't mind losing your PayPal account then literally just tell them you are under 18. Every part of that payment and the agreement that goes with it were all made under the assumption you are over 18 and they cannot legally pursue an under 18 for money.

There are certain things you don't wan to fuck up with and one of them is with your Paypal. Why wouldn't you just pay back the $900? I understand you may have been broke, but they probably would've worked with you. I know there are ways around it, but for me, Paypal is an essential part of doing business online. Meh, I guess that's your choice.

All that aside, I have a funny story about NCO financial. Back before I started my online ventures, I was poor as shit and could hardly afford to pay my School loans. NCO Financial was who was passed the debt and let me tell you, those fuckers are relentless. I remember telling the guy that I was starting an online business. He laughed and told me I was basically an idiot. The jokes on him I guess. Long story short, they started doing crazy shit, like calling me and my family members at odd times (it's illegal to call before 8 am and past a certain time). I hired a lawyer and ended up suing them. Made around $2500 from the deal and they never called me again.

I was in a similar position a few years ago but never got anything sent to me, just got banned as soon as I created another paypal account, these days I can use paypal without any issues whatsoever and they havent charged me so its all good.

least you speak from plenty of experiance then..

I wasnt talking of your situation. never mind.. Just lets get this straight.. If the OP keeps ignoring them and pretends that he doesnt owe them money, is he scamming? If I were OP i would definitely talk to my parents and let them decide what to do. any mature person would advice the same thing I guess. I can imagine my dad's reaction if he found out that I had a secret 1000$ Debt and collectors are chasing me

You're credit report won't be ruined by this it will just have some negative stuff on it for a while until everything is paid off and you've done things that improve credit score.

The OP shouldn't keep ignoring the collectors, especially if they keep at contacting him. While Sherbert Hoover may have found they went away in his case, the reality for many others is that they don't go away, unless dealt with. Below is an old post where I outline a "dishonor process" way to shut down both the letters and the nag calls, use at your own discretion:

If you have different phone numbers over the years, they will eventually go away besides just a letter in the mail every so often.

ha I think these were the guys calling me about an old room mate of mine. I thought I could just ignore them because he didn't live with me anymore, I wasn't family, and I didn't know where he was. I figured they'd harass family and finally leave me alone. Those fuckers called me every fucking day. I finally answered and said he doesn't live with me any more and they went away. Room mate apparently decided to stop paying school loans. That shit never goes away. lol

Negative finances never go away, someone got to pay for it. Either you pay it or your credit score suffers.
