1,000,000 YT views a month but doing something wrong (help)

Hey BHW,

I am an owner of (several) YT channels but one in particular is doing really well with 1-3 viral videos.

The channel has some 50 million views and 30,000 subs and 900,000-1 mil monthly views, yet I am only grossing ~650$ a month. The ad rev of course declines this time of year but I KNOW that there are some obvious things I could be doing that I am missing.

My network isnt a whole lot of help (like many).

Suggestions?

- tag/keyword optimzation?
- more videos on channel (not a lot of activity, which I am trying to fix)
- something else?
- back links?

What you can see in your account ? You should be getting revenue from youtube ads and that is for views.

Network takes 30% of course (is it worth it?) and there is the USUAL ad drop after xmas.

For sure start being more active, upload more new high quality videos
backlinks also will help but i think only if your traffic in big part comes from outside of YT

I suppose that is adsense income. Then your RPM is 0,65 which is not bad at all. You are right in the average ( the range goes from 0,10 - 1,20 on the YouTube partnership ). I Heard that improving your engagement may increase the RPM a Little bit, but it basically depends on the niche you are in. Just keep uploading more videos.

Are you active? Are you regularly uploading new videos? It will improve the performance of your other videos if you do.

Have you shopped around different ad networks?

With viral traffic like that, your best bet is definitely ad revenue. The easiest way to increase your revenue would be to find a network that would pay you more per view. You say is ~30% worth it, well that entirely depends on whether they are giving you a higher CPM than other networks.

Your income isn't that surprising. YouTube pays out very little, especially for viral traffic like that. The big YouTubers making their money off of their videos are usually heavily sponsored. It is sponsored videos that make money.

One thing you could look to do is to upload NEW videos and to sell the rights to use it to other networks. With your high sub rate, you've got the capacity to make ANY video go viral, as long as it is actually viral-worthy.

Are there other tips that could help once you get over a certain threshold of views though - could mean buying into something to help as well? (like advertising Click Bank through FB, indirectly)

There is a TONNE of money to be made on ClickBank with YouTue but if you made a video promoting a product, you will piss your subscribers off big time. With affiliate marketing, you need to target people who have expressed interest in a specific niche. Throwing affiliate marketing at a cold audience is going to get people very angry.

If you combined a new viral video with a related offer, you could do that. E.g. if you had a viral-worthy video of someone winning an awesome scratchie prize, and you had a CPA offer that was one of those "enter your name and email, go in the draw for a prize" (do those even exist anymore? I'm a CB affiliate and have very little CPA experience) then that could work.

EDIT: I'd personally though recommend look into selling viral videos to network if you're actually good at making viral videos.

your estimated revenue had a huge drop lately. You have a problem. Stop uploading and start interacting, respond to comments, get some fb shares, some reddit shares and get someone to fix your seo problem. See the competition's tags, what works best, what tags gets them the most views. Also target the country with most views in your analytics that's not native english and put some subtitles for them if you can.

Indeed I agree with these sentiments. Assuming your videos are completely unique, you haven't lost your adsense account already, and you know what not to do on youtube - then your middleman is chipping into your profits big time. I would be interested to see if you would get higher RPM without the network as well.

The only thing that really seems off here is overall earnings relative to video views, but as others have said you could have low overall engagement rates so you might want to increase your overall activity level - particularly with creating and uploading more videos. But yeah ... if possible remove the middle man!

The SEO is what I have questions about. It should not be too difficult, but im a touch surprised that there aren't any quick tips on this. Ill have to start googling some more ideas.

Things like:

- best keywords/tags for improved ad targeting
- FB advertising of video?

Well, for starters I -ONLY- changed the thumbnail image. Here is what happened: (went from 25$/day to 100$/day, a 400% increase).

Ok this is insane, and probably good for others to know..... my video has gone full-retard (200,000 views in one day) after JUST changing a thumbnail. The new thumbnail isnt THAT much of a difference from the previous and is inline with the ones used historically.

Sometimes, I feel that with YT - as far as optimization - doing LESS is sometimes better than more.....patience.
