Determining Keyword's Correct Value

Hi everyone,

So I'm beginning to learn and delve into the fundamentals of SEO; and of course a proper foundation starts with proper keyword research.

Now I believe I found a fairly good one, though if you're willing I'd like your opinion as well please (since I'm still learning the ropes).

Here's the stats using LTP:


It has a search volume of 9,900 and a CPC of $15.62.

I did a quick calculation to estimate my earnings if let's say it was ranked number 4, and this is what I ended up with:

(9,900 * (.4 * .6) * 0.05) * (15.62 * 0.68) = $1261.85/mo.

Is what I got above semi-accurate?

Its impossible to determine keyword difficulty if you only show us the page metrics of websites that rank in SERPs.
Do they all use the keyword within their url / title / description / content? The third one probably not, but what about the rest?

There is no ultimative formula you can use to calculate your earnings - it really depends on how well your landing page is optimized for AdSense.
Also, I have ranked 4-10 for some keywords in the past which had a search volume of a few k, but little to no traffic at all because people found what they are looking for in the top3 already. Go with your gut

You get keyword difficulty by examaning your competition... that is what makes a keyword easy or hard to rank for.

I would say his formula is about right but probably over shooting a couple of the numbers resulting in a slightly higher revenue than he will probably get. You should work out how much money you can expect to make before you put all the effort into that keyword, he's doing it exactly right.

position 1 to 3 take something like 80% of the traffic. Position 1 takes 55%... Ranking number 4-10 is a bit pointless.

If you picked an easier keyword you would probably have broken into the top 3 and saw the results you wanted to see.

OP, #3 looks suspiciously like a parasite page.

High DA and an extreme number of links.

I would look for another keyword. Someone involved in IM has got there before you and they have a number of months over you on by the look of it.

You will just be wasting money and resources fighting against that guy. Let him have it, there are lots of other keywords out there.

I did not ask him to show the SERPs to us. I just told him that there are other factors to take into account beside metrics (eg. use of keyword / lsi keywords in title / meta desc. / url / content)

True, maybe I wasnt clear what I meant to say there. There are kinds of keywords that get better CTR on 4-10 and there are keywords that get almost zero traffic when ranking 4-10.
For example pages ranking 4-10 for "samsung s6 review" will get more clicks than "dog spanish translation" as people searching for the latter usually find the right answer in the first result.
Not the best examples but I guess you get the idea.


Edit: Just realized I overlooked the keyword competitiveness in the screenshot. Havent worked with LTP for quite a while, sorry.
