Hello BHW friends!

I have a mobile app which works on both Android & iOS. Got around 150.000 downloads on both platforms and so far it's doing pretty well. I recently hired a dev to make some improvements, among those Google Analytics. My app is sharing text data with the users, and obviously I have a server side. At the moment I am using a cheap (yet very robust) hosting service - goes around 2 EUR / month. I have about 40.000 active users (the ones that kept the app), around 5000-8000 daily users (number provided by Google Analytics) and the peak of online users at one time is around 350. So far, I haven't received any complaints about the app functionality and I test it daily, however as it (slowly) grows, I am thinking about getting a VPS for it. I can't determine however when that time will come based on this numbers. Can anyone help?

Well, how are you currently hosted and what is your server load looking at on average and during peak?
There are different reasons and ways to scale a service.
 
knownhost VPS is one if the best hosting provider which I know with a well experienced technical staff and they have a good reputation too.
 
Powerup hostings VPS servers are good too in my opinion starts from 15 dollars.
 
OP, as long as your site doesn't get limited or disabled by your provider, why should you buy a vps. On the other hand: when they do because you're using to many resources, you're screwed. If I where you (and I'm not) I would take matters in my own hands, especially when it's your moneymaker, to switch to vps.
 
OP I think you should move to a VPS with 5k-8k daily visitors. Shared hosting is good for about 2k daily visitors (not a hard and fast rule). You'll notice the difference by moving to a VPS :)

First of all I want to thank everybody but regarding the direct recommandations which more or less hide a refferal, I will be thinking about this later.

nocare - your question is a very good one, but except the numbers I get from Google Play, App Annie or Google Analytics, I really can't see the server load I generate on my shared hosting. I have tried with various scripts but I`m not a PHP guru, therefore total failure. :)
However, another interesting amount would be the bandwidth - 130+ GB traffic per month. :) And consider that the DB is around just 5 MB (on average).

roadhamster - I used to think that way to. But on the other hand, as this is bringing my money, I would like to take care of my "golden egg". On the other hand, the hosting provider moved me because of the "server resources" needed, yet they didn't limit me in any way.

So I'll throw another question out here: is there a way for me to check the server load on my shared hosting? (maybe a PHP script that doesn't need special permissions)

Those articles were very useful! However I am thinking that a coder/dev/programmer is able to monitor the app resource use and therefor determine if an upgrade to a VPS is neccessary or not, or even predict when it will be needed. So, still searching for a solution in that way....
 
I would not for the life of me host an application on a VPS that has 8k users per day. You can get a dedicated machine as cheap as 40$ a month. It's not just about the load, it's also about the fact that you have much smaller chance for downtime as well as the fact that you can fully configure the machine according to your needs.
 
mantic0re - my app doesn't have "special" needs so to say. The scrapers are very small, and basically the whole system works with plain text, and nothing more. Regarding your suggestion, from my point of view a dedicated machine would be useless as I would use maybe around 10% of it, or even less. At least now, with my current numbers. At some point, I might reach that upgrade, of course, but firstly I will pass through a VPS I think.
 
You're paying 2 EUR to host 40k users? You're a genius! That's the best ROI I've ever seen ;)

Yes, actually that would be the situation, yet on a daily basis I have around 5-8k users. So from those 40k, just 5k-8k use the app daily.
 
As of now there is no need for switching to VPS since the is no issue at present. If you face load issue in future you tweak your server configuration accordingly and even if you want more performance then you can move for VPS.
 
don't need to change anything if it is working for you. If you see any issues upgrade to vps for sure.
 
Ok guys, thanks for your replies. I was thinking the same. In fact I got in contact with their tech department and told them to monitor my activity on their server and let me know when things get... ugly. :)

If the $ will be enough I might even go straight for dedicated. I'll see. Once again, thanks for your feerback!
 
You may try Offshore seo vps and they have cheap hosting plan.
 
I know this is an older thread, but you could even try running this sort of setup on a 3x cluster of Pi3's.
 
You should go for VPS with decent specification like 2GB Ram, 2-CPU etc.
