Anyone do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

I've been doing BJJ for about 6 months now and I love it but it's been a painful ride getting my body used to the abuse, getting in shape. Just thought that I would ask on the forum so that we could maybe keep one another motivated!

I currently attend a Royce Gracie school and I'm not into the 'this school, that school' thing. I would however like to attend a Marcello Garcia school if one opened here locally for sure, I'm wanting to learn more of a pure jiu-jitsu than MMA and our school fits this very well, we train for street fighting more than MMA.

Nah. I just do Tae Kwon Do, Tang Su Do, Wadu Ru, and Shotokan with liberal helpings of Philippine Ninjutsu, Boxing, and Crazy thrown in.

Notice that the first four are tournament/combat pairs/compliments of each other. Anything tournament is bad for the street. Anything street/survival will get you kicked out of the tournament. Anything you learn in the dojo is useless on the street or for survival.

Your best all around is Akido. It is called a gentile art and is anything but gentile when you are on the wrong end.

Your best teaching schools are not the big name brands.

When you start, a kick is a kick and a punch is a punch. When you are learning, you then learn that a kick is only a kick if thrown a certain way. After you begin to reach mastery, a kick is a kick and a punch is a punch. It is called "No design, no conception." Those are the teachers you want - they teach you the basics and then tell you to ignore the forms.

Yeah, I'm not into any of those because they are useless when a person throws you to the ground and puts you in a choke. I do see some usefulness in aikido though, definitely judo for the takedowns.

I fight 3 times a week and I'd be happy to take on any martial artist at any level with only 6 months of BJJ training. Watch the link that I provided in my original reply where style after style of the traditional 'martial arts' are defeated, I could supply hundreds of those videos not just one, yet I've yet to see a karate, akido, krav maga, judo, etc. or any other form beat a decent jiu-jitsu practitioner. This isn't medieval times where people fight with swords so that is irrelevant.

Judo and jiu-jitsu split apart and were recognized as separate forms in the 1950's and 1960's and only in the 1980's was jiu-jitsu recognized as a superior form because no hold barred tournament, after tournament the jiu jitsu practitioners went to the ground which rendered the other forms useless. I'm very well versed in martial art history and why spend my time learning an easily defeated form? We have guys that are 'black belts' in this, black belts in that, who cannot fight well outside the format taught at their gyms and unfortunately there is no 'format' in a street fight (the only place that matters) so their 'years' of training are just wasted time.

LOL.. I have taken sambo, kickboxing, and Jiu Jitsu.. not "BJJ". I have also unfortunately been in a bunch of stupid nightlife inspired fights. Having trained in all three and not being too drunk has been a saving grace. I think the dude just us has to be trolling lmao because after reading through his post I am pretty certain he has never been in a fight let alone even pushed. I could be wrong but it's a funny read nonetheless. OP keep rolling and get some stand-up in the mix but your training will help you no matter what the altercation because most (not all) of the time there will be a clinch you can take advantage of.

I will answer you and Ray Rolls right here. If you are ever in Salt Lake, let me know. Evangelize? Not at all. I am glad that you are versed in Martial Arts history because you would know that Judo came from Sumo. At the time this happened, two fat guys were not trying to push each other out of a ring. Sumo was combat wrestling in which greater weight was brought to bear to kill the opponent on the battle field. However, Sumo also came from Karate. Bushido is something else entirely.

You are sitting here knocking something you know nothing about and speaking of this or that person's school. You are a part of a money making machine and are being manipulated into making another money for that person.

While frowned on by many purists, the true martial artist is bound by no style. That some of my instructors were world class means nothing. The best training I ever had always came from the people that were little heard about. That A or B taught you anything means nothing because you are not A or B; you are you. You have your reactions and your psychology and physiology. Your body will react as your body will react.

Yes, I have been in the ring a few times. Better than the ring was the fifteen years in prison in which I fought daily in a cage much smaller than an 8 foot boxing ring or an octagon. Many of those fights were serious and involved weapons. In my life, I have been in several thousand fights. I have lost a few here and there, but won more than I lost. My body is a mass of scars too. It is like I told you: you want to be a good fighter, you fight a lot. You fight and lose until you get good enough to win. That is training or no training. You will lose until you become good enough to stop losing. The price to learn is blood and pain. In every fight you enter, you are risking death. Death will become your friend.

Training may shorten the losing cycle, but that will happen only after you forget what you learned. BJJ is billed as a combat style when it is a tournament style. Why do I say this? Because you are fighting under a set of rules. You train with those rules. When you fight, you will fight with those rules embedded in your mind. This is why street fighters are the most effective fighter on the street; they have no rules.

This school, that school, this style, that style. pfft. It is only life and death. You are a pawn in a game.

I mentioned Royce Gracie in the thread because that's the name of the school that I go to "Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu" I wasn't dropping 'brands', Marcello Garcia is a 4 time World Champion and I have a ton of respect for him and his students, he trains straight Tournament Jiu Jitsu and frankly, he's probably the best pound for pound right now. 10th Planet is another major brand that has great schools out there.

But since we're on the subject, my instructor lived in Rio De Janero for 8 years (1994-2002) at the Gracie Academy and studied directly under Helio, while there he became good friends with Royce and Renner. From there he travelled the US with Royce doing seminars for 3 years, and his professional record was 70-3. Royce's school's are much different than other Gracie schools because Royce likes 'old school' jiu jitsu that was taught to be used on the street. He's very particular about teaching traditional jiu jitsu, even down to wearing only white gi's out of respect for the origin of the craft.

I get it, you've trained in a bunch of different systems, great! But the purpose of this thread is BJJ, you are free to start other threads of your own, thanks again.

Tang Su Do and Tae Kwon Do are essentially the same art. The difference is in philosophy. This is true of Shotokan and Wadu.

I guess you missed that Lyoto Machida never went to the ground in what I presented. You also fail to notice that he identifies Shotokan as his style. I figured that you would dishonestly want to pick up on the BBJ.

You want to go on about my rules. My rules are prison rules and street rules. This means no rules. No rules are not the rules you will accept. So please.

I understand you defending your style and how you might feel that your style is slighted. Don't really much care. I started in martial arts at about five with Savate. I am nearly 60 and have both a heart and lung condition. I have been in more fights than I can count; both in and out of the ring. The very fact that you specify a rule shows what you fear. It would be used against you in a New York second. In every art there are some that are better than others and belts just don't count. I have seen white belts knock out black belts.

What I am telling you, and you are too tied up in the myth and mystic, is that each style has its strength, and each style has it weakness. All people have their strengths and all have their weakness'. Your founder even states as much. Your founder, or whomever, also tells you that in a real confrontation nothing is predictable.

You cannot accept that? That is your problem. I stand by my offer of a discussion in person. There will be no rules. I may or may not win.
