So my site is about 10 days old. I have a few articles up so far targeting competitive keywords. I know it will be a long process to rank but my question is, when should I start building backlinks?

Since it is just 10 days old, keep adding more unique articles and concentrate on optimizing your site. (Both On page & Off page).

After some period of time, start building quality links at a regular time (drip feeding is highly necessary for a new site). Diversification plays a major role in keeping your site safe and the link building should be done keeping this in mind.

Give it a little bit moe time to get your index count up (more articles) then you can start building links slowly if you want to be safe.

Now! You want as many as you can (as long as they're high quality) spread out over a long period of time.

I thought Google penalized you if you build backlinks too soon.

Google will only penalize you if you build a ton of spam links at first. There is no magic number but just try to keep it quality rather than quantity.

Definitely Yes - If you build way too many links unnaturally which will raise a red flag.

"Quality matters the most than Quantity" - So just focus on building high-quality links at a regular time interval. Add unique and valuable contents to your site for receiving good effect from these backlinks.

I don't see any problem if you are not planning the spam 1k links to it in the first day. That said, it's always good to start with press release if you are too concerned.

I've written about 10 articles now but I have absolutely no traffic which is a bit depressing. That is why I'm thinking of working on some backlinks.

Start creating social accounts, create content and build a following on those platforms too. You could do 1-2 quality manual backlinks a week.

Thanks for the suggestion. I created a FB account, now I will try to work on some backlinks but my keywords are all fairly hard to rank for..so its going to take some time before I get any traffic.

I would suggest to start off slow. Do a few here and there and continue to build up your content.

The elephant in the room is velocity. Keep it consistent and gradually increase. If you build 100 links day one, you cant build zero links day 2 - 7. That would raise a flag.

Sites can become INSANELY popular quickly, but they increase overtime. They never spike in one day and stop all together.

So, you have just started posting articles. Being patient is the main key tool for an good SEO and build links slowly after some days.

And backinks from high authority sites would be the best choice to drive traffic to your site. All the best :)
