When is it the right time to start working on backlinks?

Do you guys think it would be better to write some articles targeting long tail keywords that are easier to rank for?

Definitely write those. Especially if you're in a narrow niche. Regardless, you should keep churning out content than watching your analytics all day long. 20 articles to start with is more like it, but strive to get to 30-40. In the meantime, build links slowly and steadily. 2 a week should be okay for the start. If you have the will power to keep producing content and links before you see the traffic and sales, you'll be rewarded with those sooner.

The thing is I'm outsourcing my content because it would take too much time and to be honest I'm not a good enough writer yet. I'm fine will paying for the articles, my problem is that I'm not sure how to monetize my content...I was thinking of adsense but I doubt thats going to bring in any good profit. I've also been thinking of trying out amazon affiliate but I'm not sure how to integrate it in my articles.

OP For brand new sites, it may take a while for your site to come into the SERPs if it is already not ranking (this goes for all new websites building links for the first time). Make sure you nail your onpage seo and then build links from authority sites (you need to balance power with trust).
