How Many Are Upgrading to Windows 10?

I wasn't a big fan of the Windows 8 and their tablet-first mentality so I stayed with Windows 7 on most of my machines. I got one XP hold over. However, it appears Microsoft got the message loud and clear from us and decided to once again embrace the desktop. So I'm wondering how many of you are going to take the plunge on July 29th?

As for myself I am going to deploy to one of my machines first and do some testing. I downloaded the preview but I'm too lazy to deploy only to have to do a complete re-install later. Be interested in hearing what others are thinking and how many have looked at the preview.

I have a Windows 8 machine and wtf Microsoft fucked up their OS so bad. Instead of 1 click to get to an app, I had 2-3 and had to switch between desktops. They should fire whatever idiot thought it was great for user experience. So annoying, so yeah, I stuck to my Win7 desktop.

I plan to build a new machine for Windows 10. My Win7 machine is going on 5 years old now, so it's time to upgrade. I guess I'll use it as a backup of sorts. Maybe keep images of other machines and use as a backup machine I suppose.

i'm not in a hurry, windows 7 has extended support/updates until Jan 2020 which is 4,5 years from now, MS still has plenty of time to develop another OS in that time, if win 10 proves to be another fuck up

The first users of any Windows versions are essentially free testers for Microsoft. I usually only upgrade to a new version after one or two years.

They did, they fired Sinofsky. The joke of it is that he was also responsible for cleaning up the Vista mess and guiding Windows 7. So in my books he was batting .500

Windows 10 is the final windows. From now on they are following the Apple model and the changes to the OS will be incremental. You got one year to get the free upgrade by the way otherwise they start charging for the upgrade.

i can still buy it/get a "discounted copy" from just about anywhere, just because i can switch to it for free, i won't use it, if it turns out to be crap, more than likely i won't switch to it until their free offer will last anyhow

Or do what I did with Windows 8 and download a copy and let it sit on the shelf for a couple of years! In my case I have a laptop that I'll try it out on first before thinking about deploying to my production machines. And even with the production machines I'm going to clone the main drive and put it on the shelf just in case!

That's interesting. I don't keep up with the douchebag suits when I know that it's the poor schleps doing all the work. They just sign paperwork. But, you gotta feel a bit for the guy because you know that 20 other douchebag suits told him it was a great idea and signed off on it. He took the fall, but I'm sure he was paid well for it. It's just a testament to how separated a suit is from the real world and their developers. I thought it was totally obvious that they were trying to turn a desktop into a mobile user interface and the user experience is just completely different between mobile and desktop. You'd think someone like MS would know that.

I suppose it's better than Google's UI/UX changes. Google just tells you to suck it up and get used to it. lol They dgaf if their users hate it.

I hear ya, man. Worked in some huge corporations where there are 20 levels of middle managers before you get to the CIO. I am not impressed with most of corporate's middle management. I have had direct managers who were smart as hell, but for the most part the way to succeed in IT management is to just play the game well. You can be the dumbest, laziest, shittiest developer but if you talk to the talk then you'll get promoted. I worked for a company where the VP had to call meetings to ask how their main software worked so that he could go back to the CIO and take credit for brilliant ideas. He was credited for ideas that every schlep came up with and integrated. The dude was a great talker and made 3 times the developer's salary but did nothing but spreadsheets, graphs and relaying underling ideas to upper management.

I could get more ranty lol It's one of my pet peeves.

Anyway, I am going to try Windows 10. Part of my reasons are because it also puts me ahead of my writing competition since I can sell content from it.

I still have 7.. would go back to XP if I could. This whole hidden - not allowed access to my own system thing pisses me off. Found work arounds but shouldn't have to. I already have a couple toes in the linux world.

I have one desktop that I run windows 8.1 on. Everything else is Windows 7. My phone is also Windows 8.1. I have been running Window 10, both 64 bit and 32 bit in virtual machines.

My observations about Windows 10 is that while more efficient in some area's, the OS is still lacking. To have a usable start menu, in spite of all the crowing by MS, you still have to install Classic Shell or Start 8. MS does not seem to get the idea that the Metro Icons are useless on most desktops. When you click on the start button, the right side of the menu expands to icons. I would rather have a list. I have been told that I am not proficient with Windows because I do not use the search function to find a program. Why should I, and why should I have to learn a bunch of pretty pictures? The only thing that MS is doing here is disrupting the workflow of power users in favor of the least common denominator.

I also dislike the idea that M$ is going to decide the update cycle for all but enterprise users and will push those update without the option of refusing.

Windows 10 is also an advertising and spyware platform, though the adware elements are not currently enabled.

I do not expect to update to Windows 10 soon.
