Hostwinds says Yoast SEO plugin uses too much resources on shared hosting

Hi

I was notified by the support team of Hostwinds that SEO plugins for Wordpress like Yoast SEO plugin are using high resource of CPU and MYSQL. I have 5 wordpress blogs on Hostwinds shared account that use Yoast SEO plugin. Now I have to deactivate all of them.

Anyone of you have this similar problem with Hostwinds? It is for shared hosting. Is there any SEO plugin that uses low resources?

How many posts do you have in all on these blogs, how many pageviews do you get and are you using service like Cloudflare?

That's pretty piss poor service from them really, those plugins are fairly standard and not that resource intensive at all. I've run into the same problem with another web host, usually by getting in touch with customer service they increase the PHP memory and you're good to go.

If its true then hostwinds needs to deal with it in anyway as most of the sites using yoast SEO plugin and it will reflect in their business if they stop sites using that plugin.

Yoast does take up the most resources besides a poorly coded wp theme, and they slow sites down in the frontend to a certain degree, in a shared hosting environment.

I'm guessing they cram too many users per server, or that they don't know what they're talking about.

How many posts do you have in all on these blogs, how many pageviews do you get and are you using service like Cloudflare?

Some of them have less than 20 posts. They get one to two posts per month and sometimes none. No cloudfade. Dont even mention of pageviews because I have not promoted these blogs. I will be lucky if I have hundreds pageviews per month.

myopic1, it has nothing with PHP memory limit. In fact, mine is 128MB which more than enough.


jak19, they ask me to upgrade to VPS. I don't like that idea because I have similar setup with other shared hosting accounts. And they don't have problem with Yoast plugin.

scorpion king, this is crazy. It is not just yoast plugin. Any seo or antivirus plugin (I guess they're referring to security plugin) will use lots of resource according to them. I feel like moving to another host.

waitier, I don;t how is their setup but I'm pretty sure many wordpress blogs that are hosted on shared accounts use these plugins.

We do allow yoast SEO Plguin, you must have been told incorrectly, I am not sure who told you this but they were incorrect. We do allow you to use the Yoast SEO plugin.

If you are getting alerts about your CPU or RAM usage, we may have told you that plugin uses a lot of resources, however, we would never tell someone they aren't allowed to use it.

How could a 7-post blog uses so much resource (CPU and RAM) with Yoast plugin? It just amazes me. If it is autoblogging, I can understand but it is not.

For that reason, I have to upgrade to a VPS???

I got excellent support on this issue. I've asked Peter to come and provide more details. There is a bigger technical reason behind this. If you guys remember there was an exploit a little while back. I'm not sure if it's related to this, but it essentially was cause stuff to hang and eat up resources. They did a couple of mods to VPS and everything is good.
