Omg, MLM makes people turn into WEIRDOS

I never thought MLM would reach me in the physical world, it's always been an online thing when I'm pitched with it by peeps pretending they're doing me a kind favour. But this morning I got a call from an old uni friend (who was really cool) saying it's been ages and she'd love to catch up, in fact she's doing a small presentation about herself in my town tonight so maybe I could come along and we can catch up then.

Sounds good.

I thought she was going to talk about her personal self-improvement journey like she implied on the phone. And she did.... kind of.

She began speaking about how she felt lost in her no hope job after finishing uni, thinking there must be more to life... But then she got weird...

MLM weird.

She found Arbonne International (woo), and now she sees ways of generating income without the 9-5 grind and providing herself & her loved ones a nice brighter future blah blah blah blah blah YOU KNOW THE REST.

I've had online friends pitch me MLM before, also speaking in weird MLM language, losing any 'realness' of how friends talk to each other "I cannot NOT tell you about this incredible opportunity!". Fine, they got dumped/blocked. But now it's reached me in the physical world right here in little old Richmond upon Thames. It's like the last safe haven has been broken! She was giving me a pretty hard sell too.

Money makes people and even friends turn really weird! MLM is a cult I tell you, cult!

I was actually looking forward to her presentation because I thought it was going to be an inspirational story about her post graduation life. I wish I could have seen my own face the moment it dawned on me what it actually was, because it felt like "Oh......my......god......."

As someone who studies MLMs highly and in depth and worked with some brilliant minds in this type of marketing I will most certainly agree with you. It turns many people into zombie robotic maniacs. MLMs DO work but the approach for nearly all of them is completely wrong, a turn off, and makes me want to barf because my MLM-radar is going off from a mile away. There are ways to go about it and approach people in legitimate ways to not offend or bait and switch people. Granted many will still get offended just at the simple fact that it is an MLM but that is on them. If you treat it like an actual business where you are mentoring, coaching, managing, communicating, and not just trying to push products on people then you have a shot at succeeding and not being labeled a big weirdo. It is NOT a get rich quick scheme. Its not supposed to be easy. And DONT lie to people. If you work with the right people and are trained in the right way MLMs can be an amazing thing, as seen by myself first hand.
 
MLM's only work for the creators of the company and the earliest people that join in each region. I've known people that have spent enough on the promotional materials for a MLM that would have done better investing that money into creating their own company. For almost any kind of product out there, there is a white label you can buy for a MLM startup.

This is a common go-to excuse but does not define all MLMs. There ARE many MLM scams and there are unethical practices. It is easy to run an MLM scam which is why there are so many but again that is not all of them. I personally worked with an MLM and next to nothing came out of my pocket, while generating a few hundred per month. I have put it to the side for the time being while i work on some other dream projects I want to accomplish. Many of my own crossline, because they were trained in the right way, have invested very little, and now make an outstanding income. My own good friend retired at 25 making $60k per year. And when I say retire, that doesnt mean he isnt building his income anymore, it means he is teaching other people to do the same thing as he did to make $60k per year and that naturally increases his income for teaching other people to do the same.

and to it only making money for the guys at the top. Thats just something you heard someone else say, so you repeat it. There might be some MLMs that work that way but I have become good friends through MLM with one of the top earners, he makes FAR more money then his own brother who sponsored him, and the people who sponsored his brother barely make a living income. You get out of it what you put into it. Just like any other business.

This is pretty funny. I can agree with you, mate. I've heard the same speech too... Although, I did at some point almost considered doing it... I still see my friends on FB posting new cars, saying things like "I'm glad I helped my parents pay off their mortgage", "my buddy loaned me his porsche" blah blah blah, all in the context of him doing some stuff with MLM....
 
MLM's companies are earning millions especially in south european countries...

P.S. Anyone want to start a MLM business with me? LOL

I can tell you that right away is more than likely MLM hype to get you signed up and hand them money. In fact none of the real earners ive met who are professional and treat this as an actual business even have social media accounts. They teach against it. And they teach against using material items to try to get people signed up. If you can get paid to recruit someone this IS NOT AN MLM, that is a pyramid scheme. You should NOT make any money off of recruiting someone. The only money you should be able to make is through the sale of tangible goods through your downline as you help them to earn money themselves.

I am not here to recruit anyone. In fact I wouldnt recruit anyone even if you asked me to. I just want to help educate the public that there are legitimate MLMs, there are ethical ways to run them, and there IS money in them. In fact even some of the largest companies in the world are seeing that MLMs are legitimate and using them as another venue to market their products. Forbes recently posted an article claiming the legitimacy of them (http://www.forbes.com/sites/robertl...evel-marketing-company-for-retirement-income/), Apple and Target along with many other well know companies recently partnered with Amway corp. Do you think those companies would be willing to say they are PARTNERED with a scam company? Not even that they are having scam company sell product for them, they say they are PARTNERs. Idk about you but im pretty sure billion dollar companies know how to do their research a bit better then you and your "third cousin who knew some dude who lost some money in one of those things"

No one is saying its a scam. Ofc you can make money with MLM by pushing your most of the time stupid shit to people and buying your stuff from the founders. IMO it doesn't matter if you get paid when you can crecruit someone because they still need to spend money so you get anything as you are marketing something for them in hopes of a sale, what ever kind of sale it may be. Same goes for them, and people below them and so on...

Actually plenty of people on here have called it a scam. And they are very correct for many "MLMs". One of them posted a video that directly called it a scam. Another said he knows people that have spent a lot of money only to lose it. Another said only the top people make all the money. Those would all be scams.

Thing is it is not a matter of opinion of whether you dont mind being charged/make money for recruitment, that is the legal definition of an illegal pyramid scheme and those companies get shut down and owners go to prison. It is most definitely not the same as getting paid for movement of product. Purchase of product is what makes it a legal viable business. If people only made money off recruiting new people and that were the only goal to make money you have a faulty business model because you will run out of people, people will get mad, and no one is there to help train them because the focus is 100% on new blood instead of retaining and helping the sponsors you already have.
 
Selling Coke is not a scam either, I know people that do it, I know people that buy it, I know people who make over 100k distributing it, but at the end of the day I don't want any part of it. That's my feeling on MLM.
 
I have invested into MLM when I was a kid and I know how it feels to pitch.. I surely do ^_^

There is much more money in setting up a company with white label and private label products than there is with joining a MLM.
